Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni is scared of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye, Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA) president Betty Kamya has said.
According to Kamya, Museveni wouldn’t be handling Dr Besigye with an ‘iron’ if he wasn’t scared of him.
“The way they (state machinery) is handling Dr Besigye is the greatest credit you can give him (Museveni),” said Kamya on Saturday while appearing on a Capital Gang, a political talk show aired on radio capital in Kampala.
Kamya further said government is right to treat Dr Besigye the way they are because that’s the best way to control him.
“I’m not justifying government actions against Besigye but we all agree that the man (Besigye) is so unpredictable and they (police) can’t take chances. He has outsmarted them more than once. One time they thought he was at his home only to hear that he’s abroad. Just recently, he had been put under 24hour police surivillance but it surprised everyone when he appeared down town Kampala,” said the former FDC Secretary General
According to Kamya, state clamp down on Besigye and other Opposition leaders is a form of justification for more funding from Uganda’s development partners.
Besigye who was on Wednesday morning expected to reappear before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court for the second time in two weeks ever since he was charged afresh with treason offenses did not show up.
Principal State Attorney Lino Anguzu told court presided over by Chief Magistrate James Ereemye that Besigye could not be brought to court due to security fears.
“Due to security threats they could not bring the suspect (Besigye) in court. It is not the first time security issues are coming up,” said Anguzu.
Consequently, the state asked court to mention his case from Luzira prison where he’s being held.
