Business at the Malaba border has been severely disrupted after a 35-kilometre queue of cargo trucks built up on the Kenyan side, leaving thousands of drivers stranded for three days.
Truck drivers and clearing agents say the congestion was caused by the Uganda Revenue Authority's (URA) decision to reinstate the metallic cargo sealing system, which they claim has slowed the clearance of goods entering Uganda.
The drivers say the delays have disrupted trade, increased transport costs and left them stuck on the road for days. Some have also raised security concerns, saying the long queues expose them and their cargo to theft and other risks.
Malaba is one of Uganda's busiest border crossing points and a key trade route linking the country to the Port of Mombasa in Kenya. Any delays at the border can affect the movement of goods to Uganda and other neighbouring countries.
Stakeholders are now calling on URA to urgently address the bottlenecks and speed up cargo clearance to restore the smooth flow of trade.
