3,000 Mbagala residents yet to get compensation
By Edwin Agola
10th January 2011

Almost two years down the lane, more than 3,000 Mbagala Kuu residents are yet to get compensation from the government.

Some are still camped in Red Cross tents awaiting the money to rebuild their lives.
The disaster department in Prime Minister Office confirmed to The Guardian that they are still sorting out compensation arrangements for the victims.

"Life in the tents is unbearable, come rain, come sun, the misery is the same. We have been confined to these conditions which are almost like a jail term," lamented Ashura Suleiman 31, a mother of two.

Ashura and Somoe Ali 29 are perhaps the worst hit by the tragedy that struck the area on the morning of Wednesday April 29, 2009, as deafening blasts from an armoury site in the Mbagala suburb tore through the city's skies, killing and maiming people and destroying a number of buildings in the area.

They are among those who lost their entire homes and fortunes and have to date not recovered from the loss.

More than 20 people died including five soldiers killed instantly inside the Tanzania People's Defense Forces armory after a stockpile of bombs went off.

"I don't think I am the only one today wondering how we, mere human beings, can totally forget how fragile our lives are and how equally flimsy everything we mortals build is," said Somoe sweating from the tent heat while taking tea, adding: "Let us talk outside you cannot withstand this poor ventilation."

She went on: "Yes we are poor and yes there is a lot of unfairness over a lot of things. We are often frustrated when we don't see things moving as we want them to."

According to them, they need humanitarian assistance such as medical attention and food, now more than before and say: "The matter is serious."

The duo however admitted to have received under protest a 2m/- token from the government in September last year and wrote a letter seeking clarification on the similarity of the amount when there was disparity of the loss suffered by each family.

Reached for comment, assistant operations director, department of disaster in the Prime Minister's office Nyanchege Nanai appealed for calm, saying the government has given the go ahead and that they are in the process of sorting out the claims.

"The verification exercise could last for the next three months before they are fully compensated" said Nanai.

"Not a single job was lost because of the blast. Neither was any business disrupted. Therefore, if one lost a home and belongings we provided them with shelter and food for a specific period of time," she said. (Fukc u!!!!! is all I can say!!!!!!!)

Some 212 children were injured and 1,169 others, mostly pupils, got lost when the blasts rocked Dar es Salaam city in the morning of April 2009.

Miaka miwili bado wana sort out claims? Waseme shida wanayopata hawa wananchi hata haiwaingii kichwani, so they are not bothered in the least kufanya uharaka ktk kuwalipa.
