On October 29, 2025, Tanzanians will vote to elect leaders for the next five years amid heightened political tensions. ACT-Wazalendo presidential candidate Luhaga Mpina has been removed twice from the National Electoral Commission’s (NEC) list, while opposition party CHADEMA is boycotting the polls, demanding a new constitution and an independent electoral commission.
CHADEMA leaders face treason charges and detentions, fueling citizen frustration amid reports of corruption, abductions, and disappearances. Social media campaigns indicate planned protests, supported by figures including Josephat Gwajima and former ambassador Humphrey Polepole, who is reportedly missing. Authorities have warned that such gatherings are illegal.
For the first time, 8,277 voters can cast presidential ballots at alternative stations. Prisoners and students serving short sentences are also allowed to vote, with 140 dedicated stations. Overall, 99,895 polling stations will operate nationwide.
Seventeen parties have fielded presidential and vice-presidential candidates, while 18 parties contest parliamentary and council seats. Among 1,729 parliamentary candidates, 558 are women and 27 persons with disabilities; 7,239 candidates vie for council seats, including 718 women and 57 persons with disabilities.
This election, combining expanded voter access and political tensions, is being closely monitored both nationally and internationally.

He also encouraged residents of Rukwa and all Tanzanians to exercise their voting rights peacefully, without resorting to violence or disruptions during the electoral process.
The youth wing of the opposition Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), known as BAVICHA, has announced its support for the October 29, 2025, peaceful demonstrations organized by young Tanzanians demanding free and fair elections and accountability in national governance.
In a statement, BAVICHA reaffirmed CHADEMA’s stance of “No Reforms, No Election,” saying the protests reflect growing frustration among youth facing unemployment, abductions, and disappearances.
Citing Julius Nyerere’s call for bold and questioning youth, BAVICHA urged members nationwide to join the demonstrations, describing them as a historic stand for justice and democracy. The group said peaceful protest is now the only language the authorities seem to understand.

AAFP Pulls Out of Arumeru Elections Citing Irregularities
The Arumeru district chapter of the Alliance for African Farmers Party (AAFP) has announced its withdrawal from the parliamentary and council elections in Arumeru East and Arumeru West, citing electoral irregularities.
The party said election officials failed to provide a list of polling stations in both constituencies, in violation of the 2025 Presidential, Parliamentary, and Council Elections guidelines (Chapter 7, Section 7.1.1).
AAFP also claimed that their agents were denied the right to be present at polling stations, as officials did not share accreditation information seven days before the election, contrary to the 2024 Elections Act (Section 77{1} and {2}).
Despite submitting complaints on October 24, 2025, the party said election officials have remained silent. AAFP stated that it is withdrawing due to a lack of fair process but vowed to pursue legal action to seek justice.

Zanzibar Begins Early Voting Ahead of Tanzania’s General Election
Voters in Zanzibar headed to the polls today for early voting ahead of Tanzania’s general election. The exercise, taking place a day before the nationwide vote scheduled for tomorrow, October 29, is being conducted across the islands in accordance with Zanzibar’s Election Act No. 4 of 2018, which allows for early voting.

The opposition has sharply criticized the early voting arrangement, questioning its fairness and transparency.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. East Africa Time and are set to close at 4:00 p.m. The Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) has indicated that presidential results are expected within 72 hours.

EVENTS ON OCTOBER 27, 2025
* Police have confirmed the arrest of businesswoman Jeniffer Jovin (25), also known as 'Niffer', today, October 27, 2025, in the Sinza Kumekucha area, on allegations of inciting violence and destroying infrastructure ahead of the General Election. Initially, reports claimed she was abducted by 'unknown assailants', which caused panic online. Citizens online have shown anger and doubts about the thuggish procedure used to arrest her, including beating her.* Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, has reassured Dar residents about the security situation and urged them to vote on election day, saying the defense and security forces are strong. Many online have shown support for the protests and vowed not to vote.
* Kenani Kihongosi (CCM Secretary for Ideology and Publicity) has spoken about Bishop Gwajima's recent press conference, saying the bishop's statements are inflammatory and full of misinformation, as the country is safe. Many citizens have shown support for Gwajima for his courage in criticizing CCM and speaking about abductions, with many being happy to see he is alive, as a long time had passed without him appearing online as he had promised; many thought he might also have been kidnapped, as was the case with former ambassador, Humphrey Polepole.
* Prof. Issa Shivji (a Tanzanian author and academic, and an expert on law and development issues) has stated that abduction is a form of high-level torture that dehumanizes human dignity, and that any leader who tolerates or ignores abduction incidents is not a believer in human rights. He emphasized the importance of promptly addressing these incidents, following legal procedures, and ending the practice of excessive force. Citizens online have supported his statement, saying abduction incidents must be condemned, while criticizing the misuse of force and political power against civilians.
* Prof. Anna Tibaijuka (former Minister of Lands, Housing and Settlements during President Kikwete's era) has warned that if abductions are not stopped, they will lead to terrorism and demanded that if a person makes a mistake, procedures should be followed by taking them to court so justice can be served, otherwise, the whole country will suffer from the consequences of these actions not being stopped. Citizens online have had various opinions; many have congratulated her for the warning she gave, while the Police continue to be blamed for allowing abductions and arbitrary arrests to continue in the country, with some being accused of being involved in these incidents.
* Senior police Commanders, ACP Faustine Mafwele and Jumanne Muliro (Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander) were heard in a leaked audio warning police officers about getting involved in abductions; while telling them to investigate WhatsApp groups and report those associated with protests, they also provided statistics of Police, Soldiers, and other public servants arrested (and still being held in the country) for 'participating in discussions about protests', and issued a severe warning to any civil servant (including death), if any officer or civil servant defies and participates in the demonstrations. Many citizens have expressed their anger at the incident, taking it as another reason for them to turn out to protest to end the oppression by the Police, who are being used by CCM (the ruling party) to harm citizens. Others have taken these words as a warning to be more careful so they can arrive safely on the day of the protest (October 29).
* Many upcountry buses and marine transport services (such as Azam Marine and Zan Fast Ferries) have announced the suspension of their trips from October 28 to 30, especially on October 29, the day of the General Election, 'to facilitate voting'. The Tanzania Bus Owners Association (TABOA) has explained the reasons for suspending trips. Still, the Passenger Advocacy Association has criticized these reasons, calling them 'baseless', as everyone has their own social and family needs. Citizens have had different opinions on this; many have shown surprise at the matter and expressed concern about the availability of essential services that day, such as medical treatment, while a few see that doing so will make it easier for people to participate fully in the voting exercise.
