The bipartisan legislation, known as the Reassessing the United States-Tanzania Bilateral Relationship Act, was introduced in the US Senate on May 19, 2026, by Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Ted Cruz. The bill was brought forward in response to the disputed October 2025 elections and subsequent political violence and human rights concerns.

The proposed legislation is currently awaiting review in the US Congress. If it passes, it will mandate a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, authorize economic/diplomatic sanctions on government officials, and suspend US aid and trade support until meaningful democratic reforms are implemented.
