The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron agreed on Tuesday that the "common objective in Libya" must be an end to violence and the departure of Muammar Gaddafi from power, the White House said.

"The president and the prime minister agreed to press forward with planning, including at NATO, on the full spectrum of possible responses, including surveillance, humanitarian assistance, enforcement of the arms embargo, and a no fly zone," the White House said in a statement after a phone call between the two men.

The Spanish Government has frozen all the assets which the Gaddafi regime has in Spain, as part of the application of an EU regulation.

The EU is working to a list drawn up by the United Nations, in which individual names, companies, and associations of the Gaddafi regime known to have been used for the disposal of assets are itemised.

In addition all Spanish diplomatic personnel are being withdrawn from Libya. A statement said that the embassy is to be ‘semi-closed', with only local people remaining at their posts to carry out administrative duties. The move does not signify however any breaking of diplomatic relations and is in line with other EU countries.

Among the assets frozen is the 6,000 hectares of land which Muamar al Gaddafi has in Benahavis on the Costa del Sol, and where there were plans to build nearly 2,000 homes, a golf course and congress hall.

The Spanish Ministry for Tax and the Economy is to investigate also whether there are any bank accounts from members of the Libyan regime in Spain.

It comes as the Spanish Prime Minister is continuing his tour of the Gulf and North African countries. Today, Wednesday, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is in Tunisia, expressing ‘a gesture of support for the moves to democracy in the country.

Ndio ulimwengu wa siasa ulivyo. 50% percent of politics is lies and the other 50% is the art of making those lies look like the truth! Sikumbuki nani alisema hivyo.

TRIPOLI, Libya — Moammar Gadhafi said in an interview broadcast Wednesday that Libyans would fight back if Western nations impose a no-fly zone to prevent the regime from using its air force to bomb government opponents staging a rebellion. He said imposing the restrictions would prove the West's real intention was to seize his country's oil wealth.

Gadhafi made his remarks in an interview aired Wednesday by Turkey's state-run TRT Turk television. The interview was conducted late at night when Gadhafi made a surprise appearance at a hotel where foreign journalists are staying in Tripoli and gave a few interviews.

Qoute from Africa review

Embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, may be a worldwide villain today, but his legacy looms large in Tanzania where he is getting backing from people whose lives he has touched in some way or the other.

Were the eccentric leader to be driven out of power by a popular public revolt currently sweeping his oil-rich country, he would not be without Tanzanian sympathisers, who hail his support for the needy as testimony of his good leadership.

The collapse of the regime in Tripoli would also likely raise apprehension over several projects, worth billions of shillings, that Gaddafi had promised to implement in several African countries including Tanzania.

The Libyan leader, for instance, had committed to establish an ultra-modern complex, Mosque and College in Dar es Salaam after a successful example in Dodoma. A foundation stone for the Dar es Salaam centre was laid last year by retired President Ali Hassan Mwinyi.

One of the believers in Gaddafi’s leadership is the Chief Sheikh for Dodoma Region, Mustapha Rajab Shabaan, who also doubles as the manager of the $4,081,632.7 million Gaddafi Education Centre and Mosque located in the city.

The imposing 3,000 capacity facility, inaugurated last year by President Jakaya Kikwete, is a picturesque architecture; the only one of its kind in the country and only rivalling the one Col Gaddafi also built and opened in Uganda over a year ago.

The Dodoma mosque and centre is thus a constant reminder of the hitherto great efforts that went into anything that Libya, and Gaddafi in particular, undertook to roll out either in his endeavour to serve humanity or seek loyalty far and wide.

Tanzania’s Citizen on Saturday sought to establish the fate of activities at the Dodoma centre and the proposed Dar es Salaam complex in case the rebels succeeded in bringing to an end his 42 years of uninterrupted reign.

Mafuta, mafuta, mafuta in Libya, visima milion 200 kwa siku unadhani mchezo?

Westerners helps only in strategic areas.

Wakapoteze nguvu na muda Ivory coast for nothing?

Kweli kabisa kwani hawana udugu hawa.

ilimradi interest zao zi eleweke. Hapo Libya wanaizengea
kama fisi kwasababu ya ulaji tuu.

Ndiyo maana huwa sifurahishwi wanapokuja kwetu eti kuwekeza
nchi yetu.Nyerere alikuwa mkali na hawakumchezea.

Ulaya kamwe hawawezi kuingilia kati yanayotokea Libya kwani kuna maslahi pale.

They even say it can last them for a hundred years, thats the reserve only.Hapo alaska inasemakana kuna mafuta ya kutosha ambapo hata haijaguswa.

What is so important about the arabs oil?me think kuna agenda nyingine kama colonialism, implementing so called democracy ama capitalism, ili uwizi iendele.

Ndugu sio lazima utumie ulichonacho eti kwasabau unacho

please understand we can not have it both ways! I am a retired oil field engineer. I know for a fact that we have discovered a field in the rockies that has been estimated to have the largest petroleum reserves in the world. If we were allowed to drill and develope this field we would be independent on outside oil reserves (OPEC) and the cost to bring this oil up is estimated to be only $16-20 a barrel. that would make the cost of gas around a dollar (with all taxes included). But we can not develop this field because the environmentalists are afraid we will ruin the environment. drilling on land is much much easier to control well problems. I do not know of any modern day land drilled areas that have any significant environmental problems. Heck we could even tax this new gasoline anothe 50 cents a gallon and allocate that fund for finding truly workable clean energy solutions. Wake up America and take back our country from these special interest groups who are forcing their ivory tower nonsensical ideas upon us.
