Quick question dada zetu wa JF. Je is it disrespectful kuitwa demu? Nauliza maana kuna dada kaniambia halipendi kweli hilo neno na mimi mwanzo nilikua nadhani it is an acceptable slang. Kama it's disrespectful tuambieni tuji rekebishe.

damosel, damsel, damoiselle, demoiselle = demu

Meaning:
1 - A young unmarried woman
2 - Small brilliantly coloured tropical marine fishes of coral reefs

Wengine itawachukiza, wengine hawatajali, wengine wataipenda.

a.the official title of a female member of the Order of the British Empire, equivalent to that of a knight.
b.the official title of the wife of a knight or baronet.

Of course I can only bring the male perspective (where is womanofsubstance when you need her?).

Kwa ninavyoelewa mimi dame is actually a very respectful formal British title that has to be bestowed by the regent, in our case Queen Elizabeth herself or an appointed representative. It is the equivalent of Sir.

For example former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is a Dame and in formal addresses she is addressed as "Dame Thatcher".

So to me it is a term of endearment and respect, contrary to the perception aired by the offended lady.Unless she disapproves of British aristocracy or refuses to look at the informal slang "dame" as derived from the formal and therefore reflective of the formal, I don't see where the offense is from.

That's what I know too....

Could be, but am not sure, that's why i chose the "a young unmarried woman" definition as it portrays the meaning more precisely as its per use in Swahili.

Huenda wengi wakionyesha kutokulipenda neno hili litaacha kutumika taratibu!

Hata mimi i dont prefer mtu aniite demu .........either call me by name or call kama hujui jina langu then call me msichana/mwali/mwanamke/dada....

Keshachezeshwa huyo....

Dude,

I am talking about kuchezwa, which is very different from kuchezewa.

Mwali ni msichana ambaye hajachezwa unyago / hajafundwa.Ndicho ninachoongelea miye.

Sema ndiyo hivyo tu nimeamua kuuliza maana kama mtu anaona unamvunjia heshima bora kutafuta alternative way ya kurefer to them.

Neno demu ktk matumizi ya lugha za mtaani is not more or less than the word chick..Habari ndo hiyo.
