Why Magufuli has a shot on wooing Uganda to join his SGR

Kafrican, I have one question would like to ask you, please be honest, I am not trying to do any thing behind you, why Kenyans don't prefer to think critically and rationally to many issues?, can you prove to me that Ethiopian train to Djibouti is not working?
Don't think or argue with facts, just google it

Macharia -dont really like him. But even with all his shortcommings, Kenya has been leading the eastern african region in infrusteucture projects for 4 years in a row..and is now 2ndd in Africa in logistics
I have asked you a question before, hope you will reply to me. I am sure from this reply of yours and many others before this, if you will be given an opportunity to lead Kenya, or any project in Kenya, you won't do better than those I have mention before. To you it seems important thing is to be the first to implement anything, regardless its profitability or economic outcome, because those project that you are talking about are either not economical or not for the benefit of mwananchi wa kawaida, without exception all are over priced, but to you issue is to be first to implement, Tanzania moves slowly but smart.

Nimegoogle na kuangalia you tube, the rail is well and trains are moving smoothly, achane kutonga stories za uongo, kama ninyi mlikosea katika mipango yenu mkajenga diesel railway, msianze kuwasema vibaya wenzenu waliojipanga vizuri.

Addis Ababa July 22/2017 Strong and concerted efforts should be exerted to make the Ethio-Djibouti Railway start operations in October this year, according to Ministry of Transport.

Speaking at the Ethio-Djibouti Joint Ministerial Commission conducted every fortnight yesterday, Transport State Minister Tadesse Yadeta said the joint commission has been carrying out various activities related to installation of railway lines.

According to him, the two countries are expected to make concerted efforts to enhance the construction of railway infrastructures, preparation of legal framework, and establishment of security institutions.

According to Tadesse, connecting the railway line to dry ports, digging wells to ensure water supply at stations are the upcoming activities that will be carried out by the Ethiopian side.

Electricity transmission, distribution and monitoring are the other activities to be undertaken to ensure sustainable and reliable energy supply, he added.

Djibouti’s Minster of Transport, Mohamed Abdoulkader Moussa said on his part that they are working hard to finalize the project before the October deadline as it is one of the big projects that China has done in Africa.

Remember Ethiopia finished there SGR construction a couple of months before Kenya completed its project. Yet months later, their were no complete transmission lines, oly in some sections close to Addis had 24kv electricity substations along the route .

On the other side, Djibouti is reportedly suffering electricity production flactuations due to....get this- ''Hot weather''

Djibouti Requests Assistance for Rail Electrification

The ministerial committee formed to oversee the operations of the Ethio-Djibouti railway will meet before the end of this week to decide on who and how to cover the electric power supply cost for the railway that extends from Ethiopia to Djibouti.

Officials of Djibouti claimed they were not informed that Djibouti is expected to contribute its share in covering the electric power supply, according to a source close to the case.

The committee, which includes Abdisa Yadeta, state minister of Transport, and Mohammed Abdulkadir, Djibouti's transport minister, met on July 21, 2017, at Sheraton Addis Hotel. The committee discussed the technical and legal framework of the railway system, when and how to launch the transportation service and detailed customs procedures and tariffs for the transportation. During the meeting, it was also discussed how to cover the cost of the electric power for the railway.

The Ethiopian officials asserted that Ethiopia would cover the cost of the energy for the railroad in the Ethiopian territory, while Djibouti has to cover the remaining power. The two countries did not have an agreement on the power cost coverage, according to the same source.

The railway has a 756km length and extends from Sebeta to the Port of Djibouti. It has a length of 100km in Djibouti.

The railway is expected to minimise the time it takes to travel from Djibouti to Addis Abeba from three days to 12 hours. The passenger trains can run up to 160km/hr and the cargo trains up to 120km/hr.

Inaugurated in October 2016, the project was constructed by the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC), which constructed the 317km segment from Sebeta to Mieso, and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which built the 339km line from Mieso to Dawale, at the Djibouti border. CCECC also built the remaining 100km to the Red Sea, port of Djibouti.

The project was expected to commence operations last year but could not for various reasons including finalisation of legal frameworks and detailed operational documents.

The railways were constructed for 4.2 billion dollars; a fund of which 70pc was secured from EXIM Bank of China.

“They've requested to get additional power from Ethiopia for the railway project,” said Berhanu Beshah (PhD), chief executive officer (CEO) of the Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC).

The country has a power shortage,” said Berhanu. “Djibouti has hot weather, and their power consumption is high. Therefore they asked us if they can get additional power from Ethiopia,” Berhanu told Fortune.

Djibouti imports electric power from Ethiopia. Between 2011 and 2016, the country imported a total of 1,635Gwh of energy from Ethiopia.

But according to the same source, the officials from Djibouti during the meeting claimed that they were expecting the Ethiopian government to cover the entire electric power cost.

For the next session, the two countries agreed to reach an agreement on the power supply for the project.

“The length of the rail in the two countries is known, and we have a tariff for the power,” said Berhanu.

Each station of the railway needs 25kv of power supply to move the trains and locomotives.

The project is believed to help the logistics industry of the country as 90pc of trade is transported through Djibouti, accounting for 70pc of the total activity at Djibouti's port

Anyway, in the interest of bieng fair ,After much government intervention, Both Ethiopia and Djibouti each sorted out their messes and connected enough power to run the rail all the way from djibouti to Addis and its good news, after ore than a year after the official inaguration Ehiopia rail launched the first cargo trial from dgibouti to Addis carrying 106 wagons with total weight of 5,618 tonnes.

But Djibouti had still not connected a rail link to the container depot at the port, So the cargo was loaded using forklifts

So that means if Tanzania n Uganda or Tanzania n Rwanda r connected this problem will exist? Unaumwa wewe

Alafu kama ulikua hujui, all this you see now are still trial operations, ndio maana hata cargo inayo bebwa is only government cargo, yes, even the perssenger operation is still on trial phase, Official COMMERCIAL operations for the SGR for both cargo and persengers will begin in Dec 2017 or at the start of January 2018. That is why whenever you board any pessenger train the attendants ask you to give any comment you have observed while using the train, the they write it down to be handed over to management...
After the six month period trial operation, is when Kenya railways will collect all the stats comments, observtions then do some consulting and recalculate and see what to improve and what to keep on, This is when a commercial contract will be signed between a company that will be given management of the SGR and KR on behalf of the govt. It is also expected that the official ticket price after commercial operations start will either increase or decrease or maintain depending on the demand that was observed for the six months trial period. word on the streets is that the cheapest ticket might rise from the now 700 to 900 or 1,000.

Now, imagine, just imagine how many more Kenyans would have complained and possibly rioted if the SGR to Nairobi was finished in June, then take one year not serving or carrying anyone just so they can sort things out while the commercial loan that we had taken was just acquiring interest. kama vile imefanyika Ethiopia.
Hao wa ethiopia ambao unasema walifikiria sana , hawajajipima vizuri hio SGR yao, inaezekana sahii vile wamefanya test ya kwanza ya mizigo, itabidi iwachukue miezi kadhaa wakifanya trial operations tu kabla ya kuanza commercial operations open to everyone.

Unasema Kenya ilifanya makosa , hebu soma hizo comments kadhaa za WaEthiopia wakilaani kwanini Mwaka mmoja baada ya uzinduzi ado wawawezi kutumia reli. utaona pia bado wanajibizana sijui Dam gani ndo ilikua inangojewa ikamilike ili kuzalish umeme wa kusambzia SGR

After more than a year passed its "inauguration" still talk some unworthy reasons (ye enate Kemis Adenaqefegn)?? Look Kenya's efficiency....inauguration then opened for public service the next day. A lot more problems are there not told to the public yet. Similarly, with the "10" sugar factories,GERD, commercial farms and other major projects

It was simply a political decision for allowing some build-up of trust.... the EEP has the goal for this year to increase the degree of completion of GERD by 10% to reach at 70%. Sounds reasonable... Two turbine-generators have very low intakes for early generation that makes it highly likely that GERD can produce 750 MW next summer after just a few days of filling.

Sugar and fertilizers - that is a major issue. I never saw something that inefficient before. I never could even imagine that something like that could happen. I am losing any trust by simply watching.

And railways. Also very inefficient in the planning stage. Complete lack of railway integration and no coordination with local and regional bodies plus no working coordination with Djibouti. Which left the country with a dead railway for a year or so. The main issue is the lack of trunk lines in Djibouti, electrification issues and missing trunk lines to dry ports (to begin with) at Mojo and Dire Dawa (there was a tender from June 2017 to construct a dry port at Dire Dawa). I hope at least the trunk line to the Mojo dry port is ready with loading and unloading facilities. Everything else can be added later.

Kenya started the rail service with diesel locomotives. That is easy to do and does not offer any challenge. Kenya is planning to add an electrification in a second step. Maybe they are smarter by doing so

Ethiopia on the other hand is aiming at freight trains immediately and not so much at passenger services. That is better for the economy. But heavy freight trains require a working electrification and working signalling. That is the real challenge I would assume. But: even though there is a long delay on the Ethiopian side, at the end Ethiopia will probably do better than Kenya.

Brother....first it is embarrassing to read such down grading the issue as easy for all the failure points of talk in your response. You are even trying to give a false reason for the GERD...even Derbre Tsion haven't dare to say what you said. How come it will generate 1 MGW late alone 750MGW in the next summer?? The civil engineering work (as we have seen its videos and pictures to date last July/August) is not there to hold water for generation, be it the main dam or the saddle dam are not there yet. The power house, penstock and generators plantation other stuffs are the untouched parts. Yet you are repeating what the thugs has been giving (the false bread). The rail way....I just left it amused with your responses...as if all those things are simple technical issues. That is a big embarrassment. Any reason that has kept it from being functional for more than a year (which has been under construction for 4 years) and no one knows when it will still be operational...that is a big issue and shameful.

I was talking about Kenya going for diesel in the short term and electric in future... Hayo mengine ni yako kujibu
Ohk as for us Uganda is currently pursuing at least a 1000 MW of hydropower projects! Then binational HEP projects btn Tanzania n Burundi n Rwanda in one side n btn Tanzania n Uganda in another side while Ethiopia is having ampe power to sell via East Africa Powerpool grid.

The only reason why Kenya didn't go electrical in the first place is tenderpreneurship n poor planning while u believe u r aggressive but the truth is u r a laughing stock!

Watz mna gumzo lingi kabla hata mmalize project, tulieni kwanza project zikamilike alafu Ndo mringe.

When its time for business, kenya knows how to get her way and have the last laugh, whether S.sudan 'leaves' Uganda or not it doesn't matter, Kenya will get her share one way or the other, either through banks once peace returns, or through technical expertise, insurance, food exports, education....
