The former President of the United States, Bill Clinton labeled Arusha as the "Geneva" of Africa when he came to Arusha in 2000 to witness the brokered Burundi peace talks that was presided by mzee Mandela.

There is a piece in the Arusha Times with the following:

While many high rise buildings and palaces sprout in Arusha, slum areas
continue to bear an appaling look day after day. Those living in this
Unga Limited street hardly consider themselves part of the "Geneva of
Africa". Unga Ltd is often regarded as the "incubator" of criminals.

What about us Tanzanians who live in the slums? Are we part of the "Geneva" of Africa?

Usijiridhishe. Clinton hakusema hivyo. Ila Mkapa ametamka mara nyingi sana kuwa Arusha is Geneva of Africa. Just compliments

Maana ukitoa visehemu fulani mjini pale na njiro then kwisha. How come ikawa Geneva of africa!!!

Alichosema Clinton ni kuwa AICC was Geneva of Africa.

Never.

Your analysis about this discussion is so shallow ... I expected a well analyzed response from a "Senior Expert Member".

Is it not worth to label our towns and cities by European/Western names, why can't it be just Arusha. Are we guided by western standards by all that we do (mental slavery)? It is useless to call Arusha the "Geneva" of Africa even if there are a number of international organizations that are fostering peace for humanity while the Arusha residents are plagued by murders, armed robbers, basically are victims of things that are contrary to "Peace". All that I'm saying is that if places like Unga Ltd (which used to be an industrial area, Unga Ltd was a company that manufatured goods, thus many of residents were employed and working with the company) need to be improved. For example, the government could build low-housing projects that would better the living circumstances of its residents and do away with this filthy living standards that breeds criminals. Unga Ltd and other poor places in Arusha breed deviant behavior because of the strains of poverty. It was Bill who called Arusha "Geneva" and not Ben ... facts are just facts my friend!
