Dear Mr. Jean Vavrek, Executive Director

We are a Tanzanian voluntary group working and dedicated to the new policies of our President Magufuli against fraud and corruption in Tanzania.

Your website of the Canadian Institute of Mining is www.cim.org . It states that your Institute was established almost 120 years ago!!

It is interesting and encouraging that the MISSION statement in your website states:
To champion the world’s best practices and expertise for integrated resource development at home and globally.”

In your published Annual Report in your website, your recent President, Mr. Robert Schafer, wrote as follows:
During my tenure as President of CIM, numerous worldwide sources expressed their desire to emulate this country, looking to Canada as a role model for their economies, our respect for diversity and the transparent and ethical business environment. We have a brand here – the “Canadian Brand” – that can be exported, advanced and leveraged around the globe”.

We are reaching out and appealing to you, Mr. Vavrek, to take action AGAINST Canadian mining companies who are NOT operating according to the words above. You know all too well that Barrick Gold owns controlling interest in Acacia Mining, otherwise known as African Barrick Gold. Together, they operate three gold mines in our country, Tanzania.

You know all too well that Barrick Gold have been exposed recently in Tanzania for FRAUD and also their involvement in CORRUPTION with at least one or maybe more senior official(s) in the Ministry of Mines here. Under separate email, we sent you all the documentary proof. It is public knowledge that the Corruption Police (PCCB) in Tanzania are investigating this fraud and corruption. It is public knowledge that the SFO (Serious Fraud Office) in the UK and the RCMP Fraud & Corruption Unit in Ottawa are also investigating these fraud and corruption charges.

You know all too well that Barrick Gold and Acacia Mining were find GUILTY last year for TAX EVASION in Tanzania.

You know all too well that Barrick Gold and Acacia Mining are defending a US$ 115 million legal claim from a local mining company, Bismark Hotel (Mining) Ltd for negligence in losing mining land concessions and later fraud activities to try get themselves free from the Bismark claim.

You know all too well about the public reports of Barrick Gold’s direct involvement in MURDER, RAPE, VIOLENCE, PRIVATE PROPERTY DESTRUCTION, ENVIRONMENT DEVASTATION and the list goes on….

Only last week, in your own Toronto newspaper, the Globe and Mail, there was a detailed article: POLICE KILLED 65, INJURED 270 at BARRICK MINE IN TANZANIA, INQUIRY HEARS

Surely, Mr. Vavrek, the above atrocities do NOT fit into your MISSION statement of “the world’s best practices” ?
Surely, Mr. Vavrek, the above killings, human rights crimes, environment carnage and more, do NOT fit into your President’s statement of “…our respect for diversity and the transparent and ethical business environment”.
Surely this is NOT what your President so proudly wrote about “…..We have a brand here – the “Canadian Brand” – that can be exported…”.

We, the simple Tanzanian people, living tens of thousands of kilometers from your Canada offices, living under the dark clouds of Barrick Gold and its daughter company, Acacia Mining – we appeal to you, we reach out to you, we petition you and if you so need, we beg you to take steps against Barrick Gold for their despicable activities and operations in our country.

Indeed, there are many other countries that are suffering under Barrick Gold’s tyranny and control but we are not there – we are here and we can only talk about what we see, what we experience, what we live, through our eyes and through the eyes of our Tanzanian sisters and brothers.

People tell us we are fools to think that your Canadian Mining Institute can take steps against Barrick Gold when Barrick probably controls your Institute as well.

Well, then we appeal to Prime Minister Trudeau and his Ministers – all of whom will receive a copy of this letter – to take steps.
Furthermore, we appeal to our President, Dr. Magufuli, to use the relevant channels to request that Prime Minister Trudeau will take this seriously.

We need the mining companies here. Our people can benefit greatly – but NOT under these terrible circumstances.

We look forward to your speed reply and good news that you will take action and start taking steps regarding the disgusting and certainly ILLEGAL activities of Barrick Gold in Tanzania (and around the world).
