Senior Lawyers - Mwabukusi and Mpoki questioned for 'inciting December 9 protests with the Aim of breaking up the Union'

Yesterday, November 12, Senior Advocate Mpale Kaba Mpoki received a summons from the Kawe District Head of Investigations requiring him to report to the Mbweni Police Station today, November 13. Accompanied by his lawyers, including TLS President Boniface Mwabukusi, Dr. Rugemeleza Nshala, Paul Kisabo, and Fredrick Msaki, they arrived at the station. They were told he was required at the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam.

When they arrived, the Zonal Crime Officer informed them that he (Mpoki), along with Mwabukusi (who was there as Mpoki's lawyer), was linked to allegations of inciting the December 9 protests aiming at breaking up the Union (of Tanganyika and Zanzibar). After interrogation and clarification, both were allowed to leave without any conditions.

Public opinion:
Many have continued to criticize the Police and other security agencies for 'dealing with' people demanding justice for the consequences of the protests to intimidate citizens from ensuring all those involved are held accountable.

Some citizens are questioning, 'Which Union, when both Zanzibaris and Mainlanders do not want it?' Furthermore, others have questioned what crime there is if a person wants to break up the union, to the point of being summoned by the Police for questioning about this union?

Additionally, others have said that freedom of expression is increasingly being suppressed in Tanzania; being arrested by the Police is becoming commonplace when you question something that contradicts the Government.

LHRC: Our employees were raided and their work equipment confiscated on the night of November 12

The Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) has released a statement that its employees were raided on the night of November 12, while continuing their duties at the Whitesands Hotel in Dar es Salaam.

According to the statement, the entire hotel was surrounded by a squad that directly targeted the LHRC team, where the employees' phones and laptops were taken.

The statement explained that on the morning of November 13, 2025, the employees were summoned for questioning.

LHRC has strongly condemned the incident and expressed deep disappointment with the action, insisting that such acts endanger the freedom of institutions and the safety of human rights defenders in Tanzania.

Public opinion:
A large majority have expressed concern that if a major institution like LHRC can be raided in such a thuggish manner, what about an ordinary citizen? Meanwhile, others say this step came after the institution provided lawyers to defend those arrested in connection with "terrorism" and "armed robbery" during the October 29 protests.

This action has further tarnished the Government’s image, especially given reports that the Government itself wants to hold reconciliation talks.

Mwigulu confirmed as country’s new Prime Minister, begins by warning lazy and corrupt public servants

The Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania has confirmed Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba as the new Prime Minister, following his nomination by President Samia and presentation to Parliament on November 13.

Immediately after confirmation, Nchemba gave a short speech emphasizing accountability, transparency, and discipline for public servants, warning the lazy, negligent, and corrupt. Furthermore, he stated that 8 percent of Tanzanians still live in extreme poverty. Dr. Nchemba is expected to be sworn in on November 14 at 10:00 AM at the Chamwino State House in Dodoma.

Public opinion:
Many have shown dissatisfaction with his appointment, linking him to corruption allegations he previously faced as Minister of Home Affairs.

Others say that, if, as Finance Minister, he had told citizens complaining about the mobile money transaction levy to move to Burundi, now that he has a higher position, the situation for citizens will only get worse.

Police arrest CHADEMA member on allegations of 'inciting crime via a WhatsApp group'

The Police Force has arrested and continues to hold Ambrose Leonce Dede, a guard with the African Safari Security Company and a CHADEMA member, on allegations of planning and inciting crime through a WhatsApp chat group known as 'Sauti ya Watanzania' (The Voice of Tanzanians).

The suspect was arrested in the 'Makiungu Junction' area, Ikungi District, Singida Region, and evidence allegedly collected by the Police shows that he, along with other group administrators, is cooperating with some people within the country and others outside the country's borders.

Police have said they are continuing the investigation and have urged the public to avoid joining online groups run by people who have planned and continue to plan 'to commit crimes under the guise of peaceful protests' or 'other reasons,' as this is a crime and legal action will be taken.

Public opinion:
Many citizens condemn this act, saying inciting protests is not a crime as the Police claim, questioning why they have not yet arrested those who committed killings during the protests.

Furthermore, others have expressed concern that these actions signal efforts to curtail citizens' freedom to conduct their affairs on social media.

Zitto: Tanzania has been severely wounded. The truth must be spoken, and an independent international investigation must be conducted

The former leader of ACT-Wazalendo and former Member of Parliament for Kigoma Urban Constituency, Zitto Kabwe, has strongly condemned the killings that occurred after the General Election of October 29, 2025, calling them the "October Massacres" and comparing them to the "Tiananmen Square" incident.

In his writing on November 13, Zitto said the blood of innocent Tanzanians has been shed, while demanding an independent and international investigation under the United Nations or the African Union, accountability for those involved, the establishment of national reconciliation talks, and the writing of a New Constitution, and for the leaders of the defense and security agencies to resign immediately.

Public Opinion:
Many have maintained their stance of not trusting him or his party, saying their act of participating in the election legitimized the killing events of October 29. Citizens see that Zitto and his colleagues are now looking for an opportunity to use the killings that occurred for their own benefit after failing badly in the election.
