Zungu Elected Speaker of the 13th Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania

Ilala Constituency MP and former Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament, Mussa Azzan Zungu, has been elected Speaker of the 13th Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania after receiving 378 out of 380 votes cast by MPs. He replaces his predecessor, Tulia Ackson, who did not run for the position in this Government.

Public Opinion:
Many citizens were not surprised by Zungu's victory, especially given that the Parliament is dominated by CCM members rather than the opposition.

On the other hand, citizens have continued to delegitimize the Parliament, saying they did not elect these MPs, and thus, there is no Parliament at this time.

Advocate Maduhu: A Total of 641 Suspects Arraigned in Court for Treason, Armed Robbery, and Violence During the Election

Advocate Maduhu Williams from the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) in Tanzania has stated that a total of 641 suspects have been brought to court in the country for charges of treason, armed robbery, and violence stemming from the events of the October 29 election.

Of these, 240 are in Dar es Salaam, 172 in Mwanza, 89 in Iringa, 45 in Mafinga, 32 in Dodoma, 11 in Kigoma, 9 in Njombe, 29 in Bunda, and 9 in Tarime, while Tabora has five people held by police.

Additionally, more than 60 people in Arusha are expected to be arraigned on treason charges.

Public Opinion:
Many have continued to criticize the arrests being made by the police, saying it is the Government's way of evading accountability while letting the real perpetrators of the killings, who are the police, go free.

Heche: We Have Not Held Any Talks or Reached Any Reconciliation with Anyone to Be Released

CHADEMA's Vice Chairman (Mainland), John Heche, has stated that no agreements or reconciliation talks were held between CHADEMA and the state security forces before their release, contrary to claims circulating on social media.

Heche made this statement on November 11, shortly after reporting to the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam, accompanied by Lawyer Hekima Mwasipu and other CHADEMA leaders, including the Deputy Secretary-General (Mainland), Amani Golugwa, the Coastal Zone Chairman, Boniface Jacob, and Central Committee member, Godbless Lema.

He emphasized that - just as they were arrested, so they were released.

Public Opinion:
Many have expressed joy that no agreement was made, insisting they do not want reconciliation until their demands are met, including taking action against those who killed civilians on election day and annulling the election.

Others have continued to urge them not to turn traitors, as Mbowe did.

Bishop Stephano Musomba of the Catholic Church Prays for Those Who Lost Their Lives by Gunshot During the Election

Bishop Stephano Lameck Musomba of the Catholic Diocese of Bagamoyo led a Holy Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, praying for those killed and injured during the General Election on October 29.

Speaking during the service, Bishop Musomba said the prayers were intended to sanctify those who lost their lives by being shot, to pray for the injured to recover quickly, and to pray for justice and peace to be restored in the country.

Public Opinion:
Many citizens have continued to praise the Catholic Church for its proper stance in faith, without currying favor with the Government for personal interests, and have urged the Government not to intimidate or shake them.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Tanzania Must Investigate Killings That Occurred During the Election, Lissu and Others Arrested Must Be Released

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on the Tanzanian Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the killings and other human rights violations that occurred during the October 29 Election.

He expressed concern over reports that the bodies of those killed were taken by Security Forces to unknown locations, preventing families from burying their loved ones.

Türk called on the authorities to provide information on the fate of the missing persons, return the bodies of the deceased to their families for a dignified burial, ensure all those responsible for the violations are held accountable, and release the arrested opposition leaders, including CHADEMA chairman Tundu Lissu, and all those arbitrarily detained since election day.

Public Opinion:
Many have agreed with the UN's call for an independent investigation and accountability for the perpetrators, though some have expressed doubt that the Government will carry it out. They say an independent investigation will only happen if an external team of investigators is sent to the country.

In contrast, others say it could be resolved quickly if Western countries put pressure on the country.

ACT-Wazalendo Plans to Go to Court to Claim Victory in Zanzibar Election

The ACT Wazalendo party has announced plans to take legal action to claim its victory in the October 2025 General Election, alleging the election process was undermined by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Speaking to reporters at the party's headquarters in Vuga, Zanzibar, the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in the House of Representatives, Professor Omar Fakih, said the party won a total of 32 constituencies in Parliament, the House of Representatives, and the Councilors, but the results were stolen. He stated the party will now go to court to follow legal procedures to reclaim their rights.

Public Opinion:
Some questioned whether Zanzibar's laws allow for challenging election results, and others stated it was their mistake from the beginning to participate in an election they knew would not be free and fair, so they should stop causing alarm.
