UN calls on Tanzanian Authorities to provide information on the missing and deceased from the October 29 events
The United Nations Human Rights Office has stated that there are reports of deaths, injuries, and arrests regarding the events that took place during the election on October 29 in Tanzania. High Commissioner Volker Türk has called on authorities to ensure families receive information about their loved ones, to respect fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and to ensure accountability for the events that occurred.
The United Nations acknowledges the Government's move to initiate an investigation but emphasizes that it must adhere to international standards, including independence, transparency, and protection for those providing evidence.
Furthermore, it noted that there have been incidents involving the arrest of academics, political leaders, and civil society actors since mid-November 2025, and has demanded that all those arrested arbitrarily be released immediately.
Citizens' Opinions:
Many citizens have stated they are tired of seeing statements and now want action; they argue that if statements worked, all those involved in the killing of citizens would have already been held accountable. They have called on the UN to take action against Tanzania to force accountability.
Additionally, others have said that protests will not cease until all those involved in the killings face justice, and free and fair elections are held again.
Police confirm holding Geofrey Mwambe, insist the country is now calm
The Tanzania Police Force has confirmed that it is holding the former Minister of Investment and MP for Masasi (5th Phase Government), Geofrey Mwambe, who was arrested on the night of December 7 in the Tegeta area of Kinondoni on criminal charges currently under investigation. The Police statement explained that legal procedures regarding the incident are being followed appropriately.
Prior to this official statement, rumors had circulated on social media claiming that Mwambe was arrested by the Police and held in secret, with allegations that he was subjected to violations of legal procedures.
Despite this, the Police Force has emphasized that the security situation in the Dar es Salaam region remains calm, and that citizens are continuing with their daily activities.
Citizens' Opinions:
Many have continued to criticize the manner in which the force arrests suspects arbitrarily without following procedure, remaining silent about such arrests until citizens raise an outcry—a practice they say continues to suppress citizens' rights.
Others have said it is obvious that state organs are the ones involved in incidents of abduction, disappearances, and killings, and that any incident, in which the Police eventually come out to clarify, is simply a failed abduction attempt.
Regarding the Police Force's security statement, many view it as a tactic to intimidate citizens so they do not come out to demonstrate in the future.
