Police applaud citizens for rejecting those inciting violence
The Police Force has continued to issue serial statements today, December 10, 2025, assuring the public that the security situation in the country remains calm. Therefore, citizens should not fear going out to continue their activities.Furthermore, they have applauded the citizens for rejecting and ignoring those inciting and fueling violence and law-breaking in the country through social media and other means.
Following the morning and afternoon statements, the Police Force Spokesperson issued another in the evening, stating that the country's security situation is calm and that economic and social activities have continued in a peaceful and tranquil environment.
Also, they have urged citizens and other stakeholders to report anyone who creates or operates online groups that prepare and spread false information, incite violence, or promote lies.
Citizen Opinions:
Many have viewed the Police Force's trend of issuing continuous statements as a sign that something is not right. They have stated that although citizens failed to go out on December 9, the demonstrations they announced have no limit, so they are organizing themselves well for the days ahead.
Some have continued to criticize the security organs' decisions to continue patrolling and incurring baseless costs for the country, despite no security threat. Others have claimed that if the force used to prevent demonstrations were invested in fundamental issues like ending abductions, then the situation would truly be calm and safe, not just remain mere words!
ACT-Wazalendo: On Independence Day, Tanzanians were not free
The ACT-Wazalendo party has condemned the Independence Day celebrations of December 9, 2025, saying they did not respect the principles of freedom and democracy for Tanzanians. In a statement issued by the Vice Chairman (Mainland), Isihaka Mchinjita, the party claimed that the ban on demonstrations, along with the deployment of security forces, prevented citizens from using their fundamental right to demonstrate peacefully to demand accountability and justice for the victims of post-election violence on October 29.The party has called on international organizations such as the UN, AU, and SADC to intervene and facilitate an independent and credible investigation into allegations of human rights violations in the country. Also, it has urged the Government to accept the African Union Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, which promotes free elections and human rights, to demonstrate the Government's sincere commitment to restoring democracy in the country.
Furthermore, ACT concluded by emphasizing the importance of reviving the New Constitution process to build a strong democratic system and provide citizens with constitutional protection.
Citizen Opinions:
Many have said ACT is issuing statements at this time to go with the wind because citizens have boycotted them over their participation in an election deemed 'illegal', even after being warned that they would protect the votes.
Some have said that if the party has true intentions, it should not stop at issuing statements but also work with citizens to demonstrate that justice is served. Some felt that the party had begun to return to its basics after missing almost everything they believed they would get in the election.
Canada to review its aid to the Government of Tanzania
Canada has said it is reviewing its aid to Tanzania to ensure the effectiveness and sustainable integrity of its programs following reports of repression of protesters who were opposing the election, where hundreds of civilians are alleged to have been killed.Tanzania, a major recipient of Canadian aid, is now subject to a new assessment due to deteriorating security and human rights conditions.
Ottawa has provided international assistance of $3.4 billion to Tanzania since its independence, viewing the East African country as a stable and peaceful partner. This status is now in jeopardy as arrests and imprisonment of people continue.
Global Affairs Canada Spokesperson Alexandre Fournier said the country will direct its aid to Health, Education, and inclusive growth programs for poor and most vulnerable communities in Tanzania.
Citizen Opinions:
Many have said this step stems from President Samia's statement asking Western countries and International Organizations, "Who are you?", saying that those countries are increasingly 'introducing' themselves as to who they are. This situation indicates that more countries will follow, thereby increasing the economic challenges and hardships faced by Tanzanians.
Furthermore, others have supported this step and want other countries, along with more international organizations, to follow it, saying it is a meaningful way and perhaps capable of inciting accountability and reducing, or even eliminating, the human rights repression continuing in the country.
Case challenging Justice Chande's Commission to be heard on December 12
The High Court of Tanzania is expected to hear case No. 30210/2025 filed by Rosemary Mwakitwange and two others against the Attorney General, members of the Independent Commission of Inquiry into 'Violence Incidents', and the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), on December 12 at 2:00 PM.The case was mentioned in Court today, December 10, 2025, and heard by Judge Hussein Salum Mtembwa, where all parties were represented by their lawyers.
The applicants are challenging the appointment of the Commission led by Retired Judge Mohamed Chande Othman, alleging that it is not independent, was formed in contravention of the law, and acted in bad faith.
Citizen Opinions:
Many have said nothing will be achieved because the Court is not independent, and that President Samia has already clearly shown interference in the process, and even given direction on how such cases might end.
Other citizens have said that the root cause of law-breaking and other violations of human rights is the availability of a New Constitution, along with the formation of an Independent Electoral Commission that is truly independent.
