Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) expresses sorrow over the deaths of Journalists and civilians during the General Election violence

On November 6, the Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) expressed its sorrow over the deaths and injuries that occurred during and after the general election of October 29, 2025, stating that peaceful demonstrations turned violent, leading to property destruction and the killing of civilians, including journalists.

TEF offered condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and called on all Tanzanians to stand together to correct themselves as a nation so that such events do not recur. It also urged the Government to conduct a thorough investigation, ensure justice is served, and initiate a national reconciliation process to heal the wounds caused by the violence.

Public Opinion Many citizens have shown disgust with TEF's statement, calling it hypocritical for remaining silent while killings and human rights violations were taking place. Also, many have rejected the call for reconciliation, saying government accountability for the citizens' deaths must come first, emphasizing that Peace without Justice is impossible.

ACT Wazalendo condemns human rights violations on October 29

The ACT Wazalendo party has expressed deep sorrow and strongly condemned the human rights violations that occurred on October 29, 2025, where several citizens were reported killed, injured, and others missing.

Among the victims is the former Councillor Candidate for Sirari Ward, Ndg—Dafroza Jacob, who passed away after being arrested by police and allegedly tortured to death.

ACT Wazalendo has offered condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the injured, insisting that this pain is national.

Public Opinion Many have criticized ACT for participating in this election, which was fraught with irregularities and cost thousands of lives, saying they betrayed the "No Reforms, No Election" campaign with their slogan "We Will Protect the Votes," which was clearly a waste of time, as many knew what the outcome would be. Others told them to stop complaining, saying they are part of CCM and that this is just political theatre.

Bongo Flava artists continue to lose followers on social media following the "Unfollow" campaign

Various people have continued the campaign to encourage unfollowing Bongo Flava artists (#Unfollow) on social media, claiming that these artists have betrayed the citizens during a time when the Nation has lost thousands of youth in the October 29 protests. They said the artists have remained silent without releasing songs of mourning, while others continue to collaborate with Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and the Government.

Among the artists who have lost the most followers is Diamond Platnumz, whose follower count has dropped from 18.8 million to 18.7 million, a loss of approximately 100,000 followers.

Public Opinion Citizens are still encouraging each other to continue the campaign, insisting they will not attend concerts or associate with artists who seem to disregard the people's pain and align with politicians who oppress citizens.

Steve Nyerere: It is hypocrisy and a lack of principle for Artists to delete CCM campaign photos, thinking the public will stop insulting them

Bongo Movie artist, Steve Mengele (alias Steve Nyerere), through his Instagram page, criticized artists who are deleting photos showing their participation in CCM campaigns after citizens accused them of being part of those who contributed to the killings and rights violations during the October 29 protests. He called them hypocrites lacking principle, saying deleting photos will not erase technology's memory, and boasting that they already have a President. He later deleted the post from his page after many angry comments from the public.

Public Opinion The statement sparked a heated debate online, with citizens accusing him of forcing artists to remain on the side of injustice rather than self-evaluate and take an independent stance after seeing the harm of leaning towards one political side.

Citizens have continued to insist that they will hold accountable all those who were defending CCM.

Sugu: You are killing Tanzanians with bullets, and then you go to swear yourselves in, holding the Holy Bible and the Holy Quran, really?

The CHADEMA Chairman for the Nyasa Zone, Joseph Mbilinyi, popularly known as Sugu, sparked an online debate after posting a message on his X (formerly Twitter) page, strongly criticizing leaders accused of involvement in civilian killings during the election protests. He said it is hypocrisy to kill Tanzanians and then swear in holding holy religious books (the Bible and the Quran).

Public Opinion: Many supported his statement, saying that what these leaders are doing is hypocritical and that they present themselves as clean while their hands are full of Tanzanian blood. Some also expressed their disappointment that these leaders are continuing with their schedules without issuing any statement about the killings that occurred, saying it is contempt for the citizens.

Prof. Tibaijuka: Those who died in the protests should be buried with dignity; also, to remove Tanzania's shame, recognizing justice is the foundation of all

Prof. Anna Tibaijuka posted a prayer on her X (Twitter) page, saying those who died from the October 29 events should be buried with dignity, and that it is crucial to continue comforting the bereaved, nursing the injured, and helping those affected. She also prayed for repentance so that the Nation can be freed from the shame of failing to recognize that justice is the foundation of everything and has no alternative.

Public Opinion: Many were pleased with her message. They congratulated her for being on the side of the people, despite her party turning its back on the deaths that occurred in the protests and the rights violations, and continuing with their duties as usual.

Others added that even if they repent, what happened will not be forgotten and that every drop of blood shed must be paid for.
