Authorities have arrested six suspects in connection with the Kericho mass grave as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations intensifies investigations into the controversial burial.

The suspects are currently in custody and are assisting detectives in establishing how dozens of bodies ended up buried in one site under unclear and potentially illegal circumstances.

Investigators are focusing on key questions around the chain of custody, authorization process, and whether proper legal procedures were followed, especially given that only a limited number of bodies had reportedly been approved for burial.

The case has drawn in officials from Nyamira County, after links emerged suggesting some of the bodies may have originated from a local hospital morgue. However, leaders have distanced themselves from the full scale of the incident, insisting only 13 bodies were officially released.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has described the incident as “unacceptable,” revealing preliminary findings pointing to possible collusion between public officials and cemetery attendants.

Meanwhile, forensic examinations and postmortems are ongoing, with early findings indicating that some victims may have suffered head injuries, further deepening the mystery.

The investigation continues to expand, with authorities warning that more arrests are likely as they seek to uncover whether a wider network was involved.
