Poland has spoken out about an incident that occurred during the night of September 9–10, 2025, claiming that Russia launched approximately 20 drones into Polish airspace—some also originating from Belarus. Poland stated that this was a planned operation lasting more than seven hours, involving long-range enemy-attracting drones.
Poland explained that its Air Force, along with its partners (Netherlands, Germany, and Italy), responded professionally, neutralizing the threat and shooting down some of the targeted drones.
Mr. Sergiusz Wolski, Head of Commission of Poland
Mr. Sergiusz Wolski, Head of Commission of Poland, speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on September 25, 2025, said: "Our response to this provocation was calm and measured. At Poland's request, NATO held consultations under Article 4. Russia’s actions are pushing us to strengthen our self-defense capabilities and to support NATO’s policy of deterrence and defense.
"We summoned the Acting Russian Ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw and handed him a protest note. The UN Security Council also held a discussion at our request.
"Russia’s aim is to draw other countries into war, including Poland. We will not be provoked, but we will continue to ensure the safety of our airspace and our citizens."
Drones Reappearing
Poland also stated that these drone attacks did not cause harm to civilians, but they created fear and caused some damage to property. They warned that if war breaks out, similar destruction to what has happened in neighboring Ukraine could occur—including infrastructure damage and civilian casualties from war with Russia.
The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs was recently quoted saying that it will shoot down any drones that enter their airspace without notification or official clearance.
On the War
Poland further stated that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, without any provocation, was a continuation of a conflict started in 2014, which has now lasted more than 11 years.
Mr. Sergiusz Wolski explained:
“President Julius Nyerere once said: ‘No nation has the right to make decisions on behalf of another nation; no people for other people. Violence is unnecessary and costly. Peace is the only way.’ These words align perfectly with the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.”
He added that Russia is trying to impose its will on another sovereign nation. The war violates international law and the United Nations Charter. Russia’s actions are crimes against peace, and its forces continue to commit war crimes.
"Russia is not acting as a responsible member of the international community. For many months, it has been carrying out hybrid operations in this region, including jamming GPS systems, cutting undersea cables, deliberately starting fires, running disinformation campaigns, and cyberattacks," said Mr. Wolski.
