Police in Katwe Division have dismantled a notorious gang of panga-wielding robbers that has been behind a string of violent attacks in parts of Kampala.
The operation followed the arrest of a key suspect, identified as Olwo alias Tom, on April 5 along Mubaraka Road in Makindye Division. He was intercepted while riding a motorcycle and, upon interrogation, reportedly confessed to being part of an organised criminal group involved in robberies targeting residents in Makindye, Salaama, Bunga, and Katwe.
According to police, the suspect’s confession led to a coordinated intelligence-led operation conducted in the early hours of April 8 in Kapeeke Zone, Kibuye I Parish. During the raid, nine additional suspects were arrested, including individuals identified as Bogere Latif alias Musoga and Turyahirwa Ivan alias Musiramu.
Authorities also impounded four motorcycles believed to have been used in carrying out the robberies. Police say the gang relied on motorcycles, some suspected to be stolen, to execute attacks and facilitate quick escapes.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the group had been operating for an extended period, primarily targeting cash and electronic devices. The suspects are said to have confessed to multiple incidents, including the theft of Shs350,000 from a motor vehicle in Kizungu, as well as several cases of mobile phone snatching along Salaama Road. One suspected stolen phone has since been recovered.
All suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
