No doubt when you utter the most famous legends and heroes in African leaders of the past, the later Julius Nyerere is among them. Most of these Africans were and are recognised and embraced because of their initiatives and roles.
My concern today is about the idea of African Socialism particulary in Tanzania. What did Nyerere mean to Tanzanian to practice Ujamaa na Kujitegemea while Tanzania continued to trade and to depend on aid from western donors. How comes the state to involve in trade, controll of the major means of production and capital . Then what did socialism mean if the state involve itself in profit making activities? This gives me a doubt, then Tanzania did practice STATE CAPITALISM rather than Socialism under Nyerere's utterances and regime.
