Data from Lloyds List Intelligence shows that more than 18 tankers appear to have been removed from the Maltese and Cyprus flags in recent weeks that have re-appeared on the registries of Tuvalu and Tanzania, appearing under new, more western-sounding names.
The 159,681 dwt very large crude carrier Clove is now registered under Tanzanias flag, having been known as Semnan under the Maltese flag. Identification is easy to monitor, as a vessel retains the same IMO number throughout its life regardless of name, ownership or flag.
While little is known of the Tuvalu register, the Tanzania Zanzibar International Ships Register operates out of the offices of a company called Philtex based in the US and Dubai.
