Toon told to spend Carroll cash

Joey Barton has urged Newcastle to spend the £35million accrued from selling Andy Carroll to enable them to challenge for a European spot.
Alan Pardew's side moved up to ninth spot in the Premier League thanks to Tuesday's 2-0 victory at Birmingham.


But Barton believes the Magpies need to add to the 15-16 top-quality players he feels are already part of the squad if they are to become a major force.
The in-form 28-year-old said: "I know it's the nature of this club sometimes that it's stop-start.
"As soon as we get something going, players get sold and then we have to start again.
"It feels like it's a constant work-in-progress and it is tough in that respect although we have character and spirit in abundance.
"We've got some good players in there and, if we can add more to that in the summer, then we've got the basis, a spine of a top side and a side that is capable of challenging for Europe, in my opinion."
Barton added: "We need a squad to compete on all fronts and we want to do that.
"That's up to the men upstairs to make sure we amass a squad and get the bodies in to challenge for Europe.

"You need to spend money. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys so hopefully they spend it (the Carroll money) and spend it wisely.
"We've probably got 15-16 Premier League-quality players with that experience but I think you need 20-22 to really compete at the top end."
Barton is full of praise for Leon Best for the way he has grabbed the chance presented to him after Carroll's departure to Liverpool on the final day of the January transfer window.
The former Coventry player scored with a powerful header to wrap up the points at St Andrew's.
Barton said: "Besty has taken the bull by the horns so if anyone doubted him before, he's shown what he is about in abundance.
"Strikers live and die on goals and he's done that.
"We've got enough quality in the side that. If they are willing to work and put a shift in for the team, then we'll get chances."
Barton is adamant Newcastle have always looked up the Premier League rather than contemplating a relegation battle.
He said: "We were never really looking at it like that (a relegation fight). Obviously the league is tight, but the quality and spirit here is fantastic.
"We went to Birmingham, a tough place where they had lost only twice before this season, and were very comfortable."

Striker Ivan Klasnic fired Bolton into the FA Cup fifth round with the only goal as Wanderers beat Wigan 1-0 at the DW Stadium.
The fourth-round replay victory means Bolton face a trip to Fulham on Sunday.

Wanderers had chances to go ahead in the first half and Johan Elmander hit the post just before the interval.
Klasnic then found the net in the 66th minute, rifling the ball across Mike Pollitt and into the corner having been played in by Mark Davies.
Both managers rang the changes, with Wigan boss Roberto Martinez making nine adjustments to his team.
Pollitt came in for on-loan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi, who was ineligible to play against his parent club, while Steven Caldwell, Adrian Lopez, Callum McManaman and Franco Di Santo were among those also promoted to the first XI.
Owen Coyle made six changes of his own as David Wheater replaced injured centre-back Zat Knight in the Wanderers defence and Klasnic was handed a start up front in the absence of the cup-tied Daniel Sturridge.
Gary Cahill took the captain's armband as regular skipper Kevin Davies dropped to the bench.
With the original tie and two Barclays Premier League fixtures between the sides this season all resulting in draws, something had to give tonight and it was the visitors who made the more positive start as Lee Chung-yong swung an effort narrowly wide in the third minute.
Seconds later Pollitt parried a low Martin Petrov drive and Elmander finished from close range, but the effort was disallowed for offside.
Wanderers then had a nervy moment at the other end as Ronnie Stam's cross bobbled off Wheater and Adam Bogdan needed two attempts to keep hold of it.
Di Santo found himself in some space soon after, but the Argentinian tried to square the ball and nobody was up with him.
Wigan were next to make a mistake at the back as skipper Gary Caldwell intercepted a pass by Lee but played in Elmander, who brought a save out of Pollitt.

Jordi Gomez struck a free-kick high and wide in the 23rd minute before Klasnic squandered the best opportunity of the game so far when through one on one, Pollitt getting down to block a shot the Croatian really should have buried.
The hosts then won another free-kick following a high challenge by Fabrice Muamba on McManaman and this time Gomez struck it on target, with Bogdan there to make the catch.
Back came Bolton and Lee chose to cross when he might have shot before Klasnic completely missed the ball when trying to connect with a Paul Robinson cross.
Wanderers kept up the pressure, with Pollitt doing well to tip Petrov's fierce strike over and Elmander seeing a free-kick come back off the Wigan upright.
McManaman then had to be withdrawn, Victor Moses the man coming on to replace him.
In a scrappy opening to the second period, Muamba sent a shot into the arms of Pollitt and Gomez scuffed an effort wide from the edge of the box.
Moses then showed his pace by bursting into the area but he fired into the side-netting.
Sam Ricketts, who had been trying to keep up with the young forward, was left on the turf and subsequently had to be carried off on a stretcher, with Marcos Alonso taking his place.
Lee then lost possession to Moses, who once again advanced rapidly before laying the ball to James McArthur, but the Scotland midfielder's shot was the wrong side of the post.
A nice move saw Muamba played in and Pollitt slid in to deny him, before Elmander had the ball in the net, only to be ruled offside once again.
Moments later, though, Bolton were ahead as Klasnic collected Mark Davies' pass, swivelled in the box and smashed a shot beyond Pollitt.
Wigan looked to make a swift response and after Mohamed Diame's chip over Bogdan became the third effort disallowed for offside, Gomez cracked an attempt against the bar.
Martinez's side continued to press for the equaliser, with Di Santo nodding wide and Moses blazing off-target.
Bolton survived, though, and might have added another goal before the final whistle, Lee and Petrov both hitting efforts wide.
 
Fergie hopes for Rooney 'burst'

Sir Alex Ferguson is crossing his fingers Wayne Rooney's stunner in the derby will trigger a scoring burst for the Manchester United striker.
Rooney has still only scored six times this season, although his ratio has improved since his first goal from open play, at West Brom on New Year's Day.

However, given his magnificent overhead kick at Old Trafford has been labelled by some as the best goal ever at the stadium, Rooney's confidence is clearly going to be soaring.
And, with a return to Champions League action in Marseille following immediately after tomorrow's FA Cup clash with non-league Crawley, Ferguson is expecting big things from the 25-year-old.
"Up until last season Wayne used to go on these scoring bursts," he reflected.
"He used to do it in five or six games in a row and then go missing in terms of goals for a few games and then come back again.
"I would be quite happy for him to go on a burst now because we have some really important games coming up."
That list of fixtures includes visits to Wigan and Liverpool, which will be split by a trip to Chelsea should Carlo Ancelotti's men fail against Everton at Stamford Bridge.
It is one of the reasons why Ferguson is giving such careful consideration to his line-up on Saturday, with Rooney highly unlikely to start.
Instead, Javier Hernandez is expected to get another chance to further his education after scoring the winner at Southampton in the previous round.
The Mexican has enjoyed a brilliant first season at United, hitting the net on 11 occasions.
But Ferguson concedes Hernandez is a better substitute at present as he gets used to the sheer pace of the English game.
"That is possibly true at this moment in time," said Ferguson.
"Javier's training performances have improved tremendously in the last couple of months. His work-rate and practice ethic have been very good.
"He comes in early and stays behind. He has done very well in that sense and is improving all the time.
"He is a great impact player."
The comparison with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is obvious and not one Ferguson refrains from.
"I did the same with Solskjaer," he said.
"When I was picking teams in really important games I always tended to dismiss Ole simply because as an impact player from the bench there was nobody better.
"Sometimes you have to choose your team that way particularly in difficult games. If you know it's going to be tight, being able to bring an impact player on can make a difference."
Solskjaer was also wedded to the traditions of United, which explained why he never agitated for a move despite being overlooked as often as he was.
The reward came with that never-to-be-forgotten Champions League final winner against Bayern Munich in 1999.

Hernandez can only dream of such glory at present, but alongside Rooney, 20-goal Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen, whose groin strain suffered in training on Monday is not as serious as had been feared, Ferguson feels he has similar striking strength to those days.
"It's not easy to choose," admitted the Scot.
"But it's the type of problem I had in '99 with Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer.
"It's exactly the same when you are trying to decide when players need a rest or when they should be left out.
"Those four were different class. Hernandez is still young and learning all the time but having him on the bench is fantastic back-up. Michael Owen is the same.
"The situation is the same, it's just a different type of player."
Ferguson has pledged to play a similar strength side to the one he used at Southampton, which points towards the introduction of Gabriel Obertan and Bebe.
Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans have been ruled out through injury, whilst Park Ji-sung is going to be sidelined until March thanks to a hamstring problem.
It was anticipated Owen's season was in jeopardy. Now it transpires he could be fit to face Marseille, even if he will play no part tomorrow.
"Michael picked up a little knock in training this week, which was disappointing because I was keen to play him tomorrow," said Ferguson.
"We could risk him but there's no point. He should be okay for Wednesday."

    The news comes only weeks after the decision by cricketing authorities to shift England's opening game from Kolkata to Nagpur as the famous Eden Gardens ground was not ready. With no warning, the move threw travel plans of thousands of fans into disarray.
    The chaotic last-minute scramble to prepare venues and facilities for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, held in Delhi in October, led to the Indian authorities being heavily criticised by the international sporting community and media.
    The chief fire officer in Mumbai, Uday Tatkare, said that a new inspection would take place after the Mumbai Cricket Association had been instructed of the need to comply with fire safety norms. The police had already approved the ground's use.
    The Wankhede is scheduled to host three World Cup matches, starting on 13 March. However, fire officials said that "water hydrants, no-smoking indicators, fire alarms and extinguishers" were missing. Authorities responsible for the stadium are confident they can meet the fire brigade's demands.
    The World Cup starts on Saturday in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, with a match between two of the co-hosts, Bangladesh and India. Sri Lanka is also staging matches. Though fears of a major terrorist attack on the tournament have now calmed, there are still other security issues to be resolved. The local Hindu nationalist Shiv Sena party, based in Mumbai, has threatened to stop Pakistan playing in the city, even if they qualified for the final.
    Manohar Joshi, a senior leader in the party, said that the party's chief, Bal Thackeray, will make a decision on whether or not to allow the Pakistan team to play. "Once he gives the [decision] who can flout it? But we will have to see if Pakistan reaches the final," Joshi told the Times of India. The Shiv Sena has a history of involvement in mob violence.
    Fears of a security threat to the tournament peaked after the attack on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore, the eastern Pakistani city, in March 2009. But with Pakistan no longer a host nation, local security authorities are more confident.
    In 1996, the last time the region hosted the event, Australia and New Zealand preferred forfeiting preliminary matches to playing in Colombo barely a week after a massive blast had killed 80 people in the Sri Lankan city. However, Sri Lanka's nearly three decades long civil war ended almost two years ago with the defeat of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
    Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the International Cricket Council, said security was "not an issue that troubles [him] as much as it did in the past".
    Indian authorities, though, are deploying tens of thousands of security personnel to ensure the safety of players, officials and fans. These range from extra police at stations and bus shelters to direct huge crowds through to snipers set to be posted on the roof of the Wankhede Stadium, should the venue get its fire safety permission.

Kocha huyo aliiambia Mwananchi kuwana hivi karibuni atayawasilisha kwa uongozi wa klabu hiyo ili kupata mmoja ambaye atakuwa msaidizi wake.

Phiri alisema amenuia kutumia mechi baina yao na watani wa jadi, Yanga ili kuimarisha kikosi chake kuwakabili mabingwa wa Afrika , TP Mazembe katika Ligi ya Mabingwa Afrika. Timu hizo zitacheza Machi 5 kwenye Uwanja wa Taifa jijini Dar es Salaam.

Aliongeza kuwa anaamini kuwa mechi hiyo itawahamasisha wachezaji wake na endapo watashinda mechi hiyo watakuwa na morali ya kuikabili Mazembe katika mechi itakayofanyika Machi 19 jijini Lubumbashi.

Azam ambayo kabla ya mchezo huo ilikuwa nyuma ya Yanga kwa pointi 29, sasa ina pointi 32 sawa na Yanga lakini ikiwa ya pili katika msimamo wa ligi kwa kuwa na uwiano mzuri wa mabao huku Simba ikiongoza ikiwa na pointi 34 kabla ya Yanga kucheza jana na Kagera Sugar.

Akizungumza Dar es salaam jana, Katibu Mkuu wa klabu hiyo, Idrisa Nassor alisema wameupokea ushindi huo kwa furaha, ingawa bado wana kazi ngumu mbele yao katika ligi hiyo inayoendelea.

"Hatuwezi kuchukulia kama tumeshinda, ninachoweza kusema tuna faraja lakini hatuna budi kucheza kwa nguvu zaidi kwa sababu bado tuna kazi kubwa ya kuendelea kufanya vyema," alisema.

Alisema kutokana na ushindi huo wa juzi, wataitumia nafasi hiyo kuchuana na vinara wa ligi hiyo, Simba na Yanga ili waweze kuunyakua ubingwa wa Tanzania Bara unaoshikiliwa na Simba.

Nassor alisema sasa wanafanya maandalizi ya kutosha kwa ajili ya mchezo mwingine dhidi ya Majimaji utakaopigwa machi 2, mwaka huu katika uwanja wa Mkwakwani Tanga.

HALI mbaya ya hewa iliyoambatana na mvua kubwa iliyonyesha katika mikoa ya Kanda ya Ziwa ikiwamo Mwanza na Kagera imeikwamisha Yanga kwenye Uwanja wa Ndege wa Bukoba, mkoani Kagera kwa saa nne jana.

Wachezaji na viongozi wa klabu hiyo walikwama na kushindwa kuondoka mjini hapa jana baada ya ndege ya Precision Air waliyotarajia kusafiria nayo kushindwa kufika Bukoba kufuatia mvua hizo.

Msafara huo ulijikuta wakisubiri ndege hiyo kwa takribani saa nne baada ya timu hiyo kufika uwanjani saa 4.30 asubuhi kwa lengo la kusafiri na ndege saa 5.20 asubuhi.

Lakini, ilipofika saa 8:00 msafara huo uliondoka kwenye uwanja wa ndege wa Bukoba kurudi kwenye Hoteli ya Smart walikofikia.

Akizungumza na Mwananchi kwenye uwanja wa ndege wa Bukoba, mkuu wa msafara huo, Tito Osoro alisema, "Nimezungumza na viongozi wa Presicion Air na wameniambia ndege haitatua leo kwa sababu hali ya hewa siyo nzuri kule Mwanza na hata Kagera, ila hapa tuna tatizo la hoteli."

Aliongeza,"Tumekaa hapa uwanjani kwa sababu hoteli tuliyofikia haina mkataba na Precision, wao wanafanya utaratibu wa kututafutia hoteli nyingine mjini hapa ambayo watailipia ikiwa ni pamoja na chakula mpaka tutakaposafiri.

Osoro alisema kuwa ndege ya Precision Air ilitakiwa iondoke Mwanza iende Kagera kwa ajili ya kuwachukua abiria wakiwamo wachezaji na viongozi wa Yanga, halafu irudi Mwanza na kuwaacha hapo abiria wake , halafu ielekee Nairobi, Kenya kuchukua abiria wengine na kuwapitia wale wa Mwanza na kisha kuelekea Dar es Salaam.

Msafara huo upo mjini Bukoba walipokuja kucheza na Kagera Sugar katika mechi ya Ligi Kuu Tanzania Bara ambayo walishinda kwa bao 1-0 juzi.

Wakati huo huo, akiizungumzia timu yake, kocha Sam Timbe alisema ana kazi ya kuibadilisha timu yake tangu mfumo wa uchezaji uwanjani na jinsi ya kujipanga inaposhambuliwa.

Timbe, raia wa Uganda alisema kuwa ameiona hali hiyo katika mechi dhidi ya Dedebit ya Ethiopia ya Kombe la Shirikisho la Afrika (CAF) na pia katika mechi ya Ligi Kuu dhidi ya Kagera Sugar juzi.

"Timu yangu ikiwa inapewa shinikizo wachezaji wangu wanashindwa kubadili hali hiyo na kutumia mfumo mwingine na badala yake wanaendelea kutumia mfumo ule ule jambo ambalo nitalifanyia kazi,"alisema Timbe.

Alisema katika mechi dhidi ya Kagera Sugar katika kipindi cha pili wenyeji Sugar walicheza mpira wa nguvu wakiwatia katika shinikizo kubwa kupitia katikati ya uwanja, lakini wachezaji wake walishindwa kutumia njia ya kupitisha mipira pembeni kwenye winga ili kuweza kupunguza shinikizo hilo.

Pia, kocha huyo alisema kama timu yake inatakiwa kuendelea kuwa katika mashindano ya kuwania ubingwa wa Ligi Kuu , hivyo lazima wafunge magoli na kupata ushindi katika mechi zilizobaki.

"Unaweza kuona bao tulilolipata katika mechi dhidi ya Kagera ni muhimu katika kutufanya tuweze kushindana, nawapongeza wachezaji wangu kwa sababu walijituma,"alisema Timbe.

Akizungumzia ushindi wa kwanza alioupata tangu aanze kuifundisha timu hiyo, Timbe alisema,"Namshukuru Mungu kwa kunipa ushindi na nawapongeza wachezaji wangu kwa kazi kubwa waliyofanya, pia nafahamu wachezaji wangu walikuwa na kiu ya ushindi kwa sababu wanaelewa bila ushindi hatutaweza kushindana,ila mechi hii dhidi ya Kagera ilikuwa ngumu."

Alisema mpango wake hivi sasa ni kuiweka timu hiyo pamoja na kuipa mbinu tofauti tofauti ili wachezaji waweze kufanya vizuri zaidi.

"Nina kikosi chenye wachezaji wazuri wengi ambao ni vijana, ila wanatakiwa kufanya kazi kwa bidii na watafanikiwa wakizingatia zaidi mazoezi,"aliongeza.

Alisema hana wasiwasi hata kama kikosi chake kikimaliza Ligi kwa kushika nafasi ya pili, ila anafahamu ligi ni kama mbio za marathon, hivyo atajitahidi kushinda kila mechi na atapambana mpaka mechi ya mwisho.

The incessant leadership crisis in AFC Leopards appeared resolved, for now, after Football Kenya Limited brokered a way forward pending new elections.

At a press conference on Friday Football Kenya Limited senior vice chairman Titus Kasuve announced that the current AFC Leopards office under the chairmanship of Julius Ochiel will remain in office and oversee the drafting of a new constitution before elections are held by mid this season.

Kasuve also said the suspension of secretary general Robert Asembo, that had been a big contention within the club, was nullified and he has now resumed his duties in the same capacity at the club.

"We expected this club to be managed under the chairmanship of Ochiel, assistant chairman (George) Aladwa, secretary Asembo and treasurer Amin Walji and the others until we are able to address the issue of a new constitution that FKL recognizes," Kasuve said.

Did not address challenges

Kasuve said that part of the problems with Leopards was their constitution which did not address the challenges of running a modern football club.

The decision was a culmination of a series of meetings held between FKL and the AFC officials following aborted elections on Sunday.

The ill-fated elections turned chaotic after rival fans and contestants clashed forcing police to forcefully disperse the gathering.

Ochiel had sought re-election but faced a challenge from a group led by Winston Kituyi and Asembo and another by Alex ole Magelo and JJ Bukachi.

Ochiel later in the week declared that in the absence of election the incumbent office would continue to run the affairs of the club pending further action.
Ochiel and Asembo have now promised to work together.

Defending champions, St Georges, and last year's losing finalists, Pangani, have been kept apart in the Nairobi Secondary Schools girls' hockey championship that bullies off on February 1.

Last year, St Georges conquered all odds to stun nine-time champions Pangani 2-1 in extra time to capture their second provincial title after six years.

The two teams represented Nairobi at the nationals but failed to reach the semi-finals.

St Georges find themselves in Pool A where they will renew rivalry with Moi Girls Nairobi, three-time champions State House, Mount Laverna, Parklands Arya and Buruburu.

Easy start to title defence

It was St Georges who halted Moi's charge in the semi-finals last year, winning 3-0.

Consequently, the &#8216;saints' are set for an arguably easy start to their title defence when they host Kianda in the first leg.

Moi Girls Nairobi however have a tricky opener against last year's dark-horse debutants Mount Laverna, who forced a goalless draw with State House before beating Buruburu 2-1.

St Georges' away first leg clash at Moi on February 15 is expected to be their pool's focal point as State House travel to Buruburu.

Pangani, who have not lost in open play in the past three years, staged an edge-sitter to beat Hillcrest 3-2 in the semi-finals last year.

Ideally, it was sweet revenge for Pangani, who had in the previous year lost the title to Hillcrest in a penalty shootout following a barren draw after regular time.

Their story will read from the same script of revenge when the two giants renew acquittance in Pool B on February 15 at Hillcrest.

The pool also has Precious Blood, Kenya High and Kianda.

Ought to tread cautiously

Realistically, Pangani boasts an edge over Kianda but Hillcrest ought to tread cautiously away to Kenya High as both sets of teams play their opening matches.

Fixtures released by coordinator James Akweri have this year's league following the traditional format of two stages, the preliminaries and the knockouts. The teams will hence play each other in a round robin, on a home and away basis, in the pools.

The winner and the runner-up in the group stages will proceed to the semi-finals and subsequent finals, which are tentatively slated for March 12 and 19, respectively.

HUKU kocha mkuu wa Taifa Stars, Jan Poulsen akiendelea na harakati za kuwafuatila baadhi ya nyota wake katika mechi za Ligi Kuu ili kujua maendeleo yao, Shirikisho la Soka Tanzania (TFF) limesema kuwa lipo katika mchakato wa kuhakikisha linaitafutia timu hiyo mechi ya kujipima nguvu kabla ya kupambana na Jamhuri ya Afrika ya Kati.

Stars inatarajia kupambana na Jamhuri ya Kati mwezi ujao katika mchezo wa kuwania kushiriki fainali za Mataifa ya Afrika mwakani.

Akizungumza na Mwananchi jana, ofisa habari wa TFF, Boniface Wambura alisema kuwa shirikisho linamejipanga ili kuhakikisha Stars inafanya vizuri katika mchezo huo ambao una umuhimu mkubwa katika kusafisha njia ya kuelekea kwenye fainali hizo.

"Tupo katika mchakato wa kuhakikisha Stars inapata mechi moja ama mbili za kimataifa za kujipima nguvu kabla ya kupambana na wapinzani wao hao (Jamhuri ya Afrika ya Kati).

"Tunaendelea kufanya mazungumzo na baadhi ya nchi na pindi mambo yatakapokuwa tayari tutafahamishana," alisema Wambura.

Katika hatua nyingine, Poulsen alisema kuwa kwa sasa yupo katika mchakato wa kuwafuatilia nyota wake wanaocheza Ligi Kuu ya Tanzania Bara ili kujua maendeleo yao.

Alisema hatua hiyo ni moja kati ya mikakati yake aliyojiwekea ili kujua mwenendo mzima wa wachezaji hao kabla ya kuwaita katika kikosi chake.

"Kama kocha lazima niwe najua nini wanachofanya wachezaji wangu wakati wakiwa na klabu zao hivyo kwa sasa nipo katika mchakato wa kuwaangali ikiwa ni pamoja na nyota wengine kabla ya kuwaita katika kikosi changu," alisema Poulsen hivi karibuni wakati akizungumza na Mwananchi katika mechi ya Ligi Kuu iliyozikutanisha Azam na African Lyon.

LICHA ya hofu ya mabomu uliyotanda kwenye jiji la Dar es Salaam, mchezo kati ya JKT Ruvu na Azam utafanyika kesho kama ulivyopangwa kwenye Uwanja wa Uhuru.

Katibu Mkuu wa Shirikisho la Soka Tanzania (TFF), Angetile Osiah aliiambia Mwananchi jana kuwa mchezo huo hautahathiriwa na watu waliokumbwa wa mlipuko huo mabomu kwa vile tayari wameshahamishwa kutoka kwenye uwanja huo.

"Mkurugenzi wetu wa Ufundi (Sunday Kayuni), alishaenda eneo la tukio na ameonana na meneja wa uwanja, Josephine Mutahiwa na kumhakikishia kuwa watu hao wataondolewa na hiyo Jumapili mchezo utakuwepo kama kawaida,"alisema Osiah

Awali, kulikuwa na hofu ya kutofanyika kwa mchezo huo jijini Dar es Salaam kutokana na uwanja huo kutumiwa na waathirika wa mabomu yaliyolipuka usiku wa kuamkia juzi kwenye Kambi ya Jeshi la Wananchi Tanzania (JWTZ), Gongolamboto na kuua watu zaidi ya 20 na mamia ya wengine kujeruhiwa.

Kufuatia hali hiyo wakazi wa maeneo hayo waliweka kambi kwenye uwanja huo na kusababisha hofu kwa kuharibika kwa ratiba ya ligi ambayo inaonyesha kuwa kesho Azam itachuana na JKT Ruvu kwenye uwanja huo.

MASHABIKI wa soka duniani wamepumua kwa faraja baada ya maombi ya mashirikisho ya soka, Fifa na lile la Ulaya, Uefa kutaka haki za kurusha laivu michuano ziwe za kulipwa kutupwa.

Badala yake, fainali hizo zitaendelea kurushwa laivu bure kupitia vituo mbalimbali duniani badala za zile za binafsi ambazo mashabiki hulazimika kulipia kwa bei kubwa.

Mahakama Kuu ya Umoja wa Ulaya (EU) mjini Luxembourg imeamua Alhamisi kwamba Fifa na Uefa hawana haki ya kuuza michuano hiyo kwa mitandao ya vituo vya televisheni za kulipia.

Badala yake, mahakama hiyo ilieleza kuwa fainali za Kombe la Dunia na mechi za Ulaya ni matukio ya kijamii na kiutamaduni kwa ajili ya watu wote, wakiwamo maskini na wasio na uwezo.

Huo ni uamuzi wa pili wa ushindi kwa watu maskini mwezi huu. Awali, mahakama moja ya Ulaya iliamuru kwamba baa na watu wengine wanao uhuru wa kutumia dekoda rahisi za satelaiti kuonyesha mechi za Ligi Kuu ya England, hata ni kukiuka haki binafsi za nchi kuhusu mikataba ya matangazo.

"Ni jambo la kujivunia kuona maamuzi haya makubwa mawili yanafikiwa kwa muda mfupi kwa lengo la kuwasaidia wasio na uwezo," alisema Callum Murray, Mkurugenzi wa Uhariri wa Sportcal Global Communication, kampuni ya michezo inayojishughulisha na matangazo na haki za kibiashara.

Televisheni za kulipia katika England, bei zao huanzia pauni 40 (dola65) kwa mwezi na baadhi ya mechi zina malipo makubwa zaidi kwa kuangalia mechi.

Lakini, kwa uamuzi huu wa sasa wa mahakama ya EU, huenda kukawa na ongezeko la bei kwa bia na viazi vya kukaanga kwa mashabiki pamoja na gharama za pango.

Fifa na Uefa, ambao husimamia michuano ya soka ya dunia na Ulaya walitaka kuuza haki hizi kwa mechi mbalimbali za fainali zao kwa watu binafsi au makampuni ambayo yangetoa bei kubwa, vikiwamo vituo binafsi vya televisheni za kulipia, wakidai kwamba haki za utangazaji wa fainali hizo ni chanzo chao kikubwa cha mapato.

Wakati nchi kadhaa za EU zimeacha nafasi huru kwa baadhi ya mechi kuonekana bure, zikiwamo za timu zao za taifa na fainali na nusu fainali ya michuano mikubwa ya Ulaya, nchi kama Uingereza na Ubelgiji zimeacha haki hizo kwa vituo binafsi vya televisheni za kulipia.

Ili kuweza kutengeneza fedha zaidi kutoka bei ya tiketi nchini Uingereza, Fifa na Uefa walifungua kesi katika Mahakama Kuu ya EUnion, wakidai kwamba mechi muhimu kama za nusu fainali na fainali zilikuwa tayari zimewekewa kinga.
Pia, walidai kwamba mechi nyingi za raundi za kwanza hazina mashabiki wengi na haziingizi kiasi kikubwa cha fedha.

Hata hivyo, mahakama hiyo ilisema fainali za Kombe la Dunia na zile za Ulaya, yalikuwa matukio pekee ambayo hayawezi kuachwa kuchezewa.

Fifa na Uefa zimepewa muda wa miezi miwili kupitia hukumu hiyo na kuangalia kama zinafikiria kukata rufaa.

"Hizi ni habari njema kwa watu wanaopenda kuangalia mechi na matukio hayo maarufu ya kimichezo kupitia televisheni bila kulazimika kuzilipia," alieleza msemaji wa EU , Jonathan Todd.


Uefa ilieleza katika taarifa yake jana kwamba imekatishwa tamaa na uamuzi huo wa mahakama. Ikaeleza kuwa itakaa chini na kuupitia na kuamua hatua ya kuchukua kwa siku chache zijazo. Kwa upande, Fifa haijaeleza lolote kuhusu uamuzi huo.

Fifa iliingiza kiasi cha dola 2 bilioni kutokana na haki za televisheni na vyombo vya habari kwa fainali za mwaka 2010 nchini Afrika Kusini . Uefa ilieleza kuwa kwamba mapato yake kwa fainali za wiki tatu za Euro 2008 nchini Austria na Uswisi zilikubwa dola 2.04 bilioni, ambazo ni zaidi ya nusu ya zile zinazotokana na haki za kuonyesha mechi hizo.

Nchini Uingereza, BBC na ITV zimeomba kuwa na haki ya pamoja ya kurusha mechi za soka, jambo ambalo linaweza kudumaza soko.

Kule Marekani, michuano mikubwa ya michezo kama mpira wa magongo, baseball, Ligi ya Kikapu (NBA), yote huonyeshwa bure.

Kesi hiyo ilifunguliwa mahakamani na mmiliki mmoja wa baa wa Uingereza aliyetaka kuonyesha mechi za Ligi Kuu akitumia dekoda nafuu kutoka Ugiriki.

The national men's and women's hockey teams resume training next weekend at the City Park Hockey Stadium in readiness for the 2012 London Olympic Games qualifiers later this year.

The teams, that had been preparing for close to three months, broke camp late November to enable Telkom Orange and Strathmore University prepare for the Africa Cup Club championships held in Accra as well as Christmas holiday.

In a communication to the clubs and coaches, the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) convenor for coaching and development committee, Teddy Jhite, said the sessions will be held January 15 and 16 starting 2.30pm and 10am respectively.

The sessions will held every weekend with some being slotted during the week.

The men's last three session had 40 players while 30 players have been attending women's training.

Jhite explained that the squads will be trimmed to manageable sizes of 25 players each by mid February.

A panel of coaches has been overseeing both sides' training and they include Jhite, Strathmore University's Meshak Senge, Elisha Opere of Green Sharks, Sliders' Nixon Nyaganga and video coach Tom Olal.

He emphasised that players must dedicate their energy and resources to training so as to make the final selection easier.

Egypt's Sharkia claimed an unprecedented 19th victory with Nigeria's Heartland wrapping up a third diadem as the 22nd Africa Cup Club hockey championships ended on Saturday at the National Hockey Stadium, Accra.

Earlier, Kenya's Strathmore University lost to another Egyptian side, Police, in their play-offs for bronze while Yobe Desert Queens from Nigeria beat home girls Reformers 5-4 in sizzling penalty flicks to claim women's bronze.

Women's defending champions Telkom Orange from Kenya had it tough, finishing fifth after beating Sharkia 4-0 in the play-offs. Telkom are due in Nairobi at midday on Monday.

Following their bubbly 3-3 draw in the regular league, Sharkia roared back to crush hosts Trustees 4-1 and retain the trophy they won last year in Nairobi.

Heartland broke the hearts of young Extinguishers when they summoned their experience to rally from 0-1 at the intervals and triumph 3-2 in another pulsating final.

Sharkia, synonymous in scoring from penalty corners, came out with wholly diverse approach with their dangerman Hassan Mohammed leading an all-field goals assault with a brace in quick succession.

All their goals were very well calculated from field play, with their strikers easily running rings around the hosts' defenders.

Waleed Mahmoud gave the team from the land of Pharaohs the lead in the sixth minute after some quick tap from Mohammed Eddress and Amrou Metwalli.

But those were the only moments the champions had in the first half as Trustees launched some vicious attacks to claim four penalty corners, all in vain.

Pay for missed opportunities

A seemingly overwhelmed Trustees midfield delivered on some occasion but inspirational David Ghablah, Matthew Damale and youngster Jonnie Botsio lacked the final strike.

Trustees were to pay for their missed opportunities when Hassan Mohammed turned their defence inside out to score on the stroke of half time and two minutes into the second session.

Attempts to restructure their attacks met a fortified Pharaohs defence, with skipper Osama Abd-Elsamad firm in goal.

Sharkia were in a class of their own as Hossam Ezaat Gobran finished off some scintillating build-up from the right flank with a 50th-minute goal. Botsio pulled one back for Trustees in the 68 minute.

"We missed a lot of chances, especially penalty corners, when we met them first; hence we had to adjust to some new cocktail and it really worked well," said Sharkia coach Yahya Debes.
