TAMESA accused of hiking vehicle prices
Ilala, Kinondoni, and Temeke Municipal Councils have accused the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical & Electronics Services Agency (TAMESA) for hiking prices of vehicles and maintenance. The three authorities came out with the allegations before the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Mr William Lukuvi during the Road Board deliberations meeting held in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Dar es Salaam City Council Director Bakari Kingobi alleged that his Council had issued 200m/- to TAMESA for the purchase of a Mercedez Benz vehicle to be used by the mayor.
However he said that when the council investigated the issue, it was discovered that the vehicle had a market value of 127m/- and not 200m/- as indicated by TAMESA.
"We wrote them a letter demanding a refund but TAMESA did not reply us," he said.
Mr Kingobi added that since they wrote to the agency they expected to get an answer on what had happened, or receive an explanation on what had transpired. He added that when they ordered the mayor's car, they also ordered a new Suzuki vehicle which has not been delivered to date after six months.
An official from the Temeke Municipal Council Mr Stephen Kongwa said he had previously experienced some problems with the Agency when they ordered two Isuzu lorries.
He said that they had paid 150m/- to the Agency to coordinate the purchase of the vehicles, but the agency wrote back, saying the council informing them that the vehicles could each cost 126m/-.
"After receiving the letter we were not satisfied and we decided to conduct a research, and discovered that the vehicles only cost 60m/- each," he said. Another official from the Ilala Municipal council Mafuku Rajab said that they had also experienced the same problem with the Agency when they sent vehicles for mechanical repairs.
He said that when they sent the municipal Directors vehicle for repairs, they were told that the costs would cost 2m/- but after the repair, they received a 500,000/- receipt as actual costs for the same work. Mr Lukuvi directed the municipal councils to submit to him all the written documents of their allegations. "We shall try to solve such problems which hinder our urge for community development," he said.
