Manchester City will battle with holders Real Madrid for a place in the Champions League final after knocking Bayern Munich out.

season after missing a penalty as Manchester City drew 1-1 at Bayern Munich to cruise into the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Haaland was on target in a f3-0 first-leg victory that put City in control of the quarter-final and he struck again to open the scoring at Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

The prolific striker had missed a spot-kick for the first time in two years in the first half, but he silenced the Bayern faithful after the break.

Joshua Kimmich ended City's 10-match winning run by converting a harshly awarded penalty before Thomas Tuchel was sent off as Pep Guardiola, a former Bayern boss, saw his side seal a 4-1 aggregate win and a last-four tie against holders Real Madrid.

Kingsley Coman was a huge threat down the right as Bayern started with a great tempo and Leroy Sane should have put them in front when he fired wide after racing clear.

There was drama when Dayot Upamecano was shown a red card by referee Clement Turpin for a professional foul on Haaland, but the defender was given a reprieve as the Norway striker was offside.

Upamecano breathed another sigh of relief when Haaland put his spot-kick over the crossbar nine minutes before half-time after the Bayern centre-back was harshly penalised for handball.

The Bavarian giants continued to look dangerous, but City produced a devastating counter-attack to take the lead on the night after Ederson denied Coman from a tight angle.

Kevin De Bruyne was the provider, slipping in Haaland to clinically drill beyond Yann Sommer with his left foot after Upamecano slipped 12 minutes into the second half.

Sadio Mane replaced Sane, the pair who were involved in an altercation after the first leg, before Mathys Tel had a goal ruled out for offside.

Kimmich converted from 12 yards out after Manuel Akanji was unfortunate to have been penalised for handball seven minutes from time, with Tuchel then seeing red for his touchline antics as Bayern crashed out.

What does it mean? City scenting famous treble

There was no 100th Champions League win as boss for Pep Guardiola in his 400th match in charge of City, but the Spaniard will not be losing any sleep over that.

A Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble is very much on for City, who looked better equipped than ever to be crowned European champions for the first time.

Bayern must turn their attention to the battle for the Bundesliga title.

Haaland closing in on half-century

Haaland raised the roof when he missed a first penalty in 16 attempts, having last failed to convert from the spot when playing for Bayern's rivals Borussia Dortmund against Union Berlin in April 2021.

He had the last laugh, though, finding the back of the net for a 15th time in seven games with his lethal left foot.

More woe for Upamecano

Upamecano endured a nightmare in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium last week and he was unable to make amends.

The Frenchman had a let-off in the first half after initially being given his marching orders and although he can feel aggrieved to have had a penalty awarded against him, he will not want to watch a replay of Haaland scoring while he was on the deck.

Needless to say, Manchester City are at the top of their form and all the clues are indicating a treble victory for the brilliant Citizens.

Although the victory for the semi final contest between them and the defending champions Real Madrid seems to be hanging in balance, on paper Manchester City look to be a better side both tactically and technically.

However for the reigning champions, history will be in their favour because they've won the trophies several times in the past even when they've been less fancied, anyway history does not always repeat itself but let us wait and see what will transpire.

Erling Haaland has scored 35 goals in 27 Champions League games in his career.

48 goals in 41 games as Manchester City player this season.
