Premier League - Yankees 'worth more than United'

The New York Yankees have overtaken Manchester United as the world's most valuable sports team brand, according to Forbes.

The American finance magazine rates the Bronx Bombers' brand value at £227.8 million, compared to the £197.9m that the Red Devils' name is worth.

The team brand value is determined as a portion of "a team's overall value that is derived from its name as opposed to its market and league".
United's overall team value is still higher than that of the Yankees - the Old Trafford side rated as worth £1.272bn compared to the £1.109bn value of the Yankees.
The Yankees leapt above United after they won the World Series - the 27th in their history - last year, the subsequent increase in merchandising and the opening of their new stadium.
Official apparel and products commemorating the Yankees' championship win drew a huge £312m in sales, while the first season at the new 52,000 capacity Yankee Stadium drove sponsorship up by 40 per cent.
However, United can expect to regain top spot in the list next year after signing a new, four-year £90m shirt sponsorship deal with AON. Combined with their existing deal with kit manufacturer Nike, those two deals alone are set to net United around £45m a year.
German champions Bayern Munich, who eliminated United en route to this year's Champions League final, are sixth in the list, one place above United's Premier League rivals Arsenal.
American sports teams make up half of the top 10, with the other five spots all filled by European football teams.
Despite losing out on the Spanish league title to Barcelona, Real Madrid are comfortably ahead of their Catalan rivals. Los Merengues have the biggest single television deal in professional sports, worth an incredible £970m over seven years.
