First Lady Margaret Kenyatta welcomes the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamin Bin Hamad Al Thani at State House, Nairobi. The Gulf nation’s leader was accompanied by more than two dozen billionaires in his delegation. PHOTO | PSCU

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamin Bin Hamad Al Thani who was in Nairobi this week signed various agreements meant to promote tourism, culture, education and scientific research.

But just who was in the Emir’s delegation?

The Nation has learnt the Gulf nation’s leader was accompanied by more than two dozen billionaires in his delegation.

They were the who-is-who in the Qatari government and business circles.

He was with Sheikh Khalifa Bin Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani, the Chairman of the Qatar Chambers, Mr Akbar al-Baker, the Chief Executive of the Qatar Airways which is reportedly interested in a stake in Kenya Airways as well as Abdulaziz bin Nasser al-Khalifa, the boss of Qatar Development Bank which often gives loans to Qatar State agencies involved in agricultural projects.

There was also Nabeel Buainain, CEO of Qatari real estate firm Qatar Diar as well as Sheikh Ali bin Hamad bin Khalid al-Thani, the president of construction firm HBK Holding.

Others included Ashraf Abdulrahim Abu Issa, President of the Abu Issa Holding, a Qatari firm involved in seeking investment opportunities abroad, Mr Badir Abdulhameed Mustafoy, CEO of civil engineering firm Qatar Building Company and Ahmed Hamad al-Muhanadi Pharmaceutical Industries.

BUSINESS

Were they seeking business or just providing an influential entourage to the Emir?

Our sources say many other discussions were held signalling thawing relations, but no tangible agreement was reached.

Relations between Kenya and Qatar have only recently started to look up.

They were punctuated with suspicions and distance with Qatar suspected of being behind a case filed by Somalia at the International Court of Justice over a maritime boundary.

Today, no meaningful Qatar investment exists in Kenya, other than occasional relief support to communities in north eastern region.

WORKERS

This is despite the fact that at least 15,000 Kenyans work in Qatar as professionals.

The number could be higher if casual labourers are included.

In fact, the two countries did not even have active diplomatic relations until 2010 when Kenya established an embassy in Doha and Qatar.

In fact, trade between the two countries has only recently started to look up, rising from Sh1.9 billion in 2008 to Sh6.6 billion in 2015.

Kenya imported goods worth Sh5.573 billion in 2015 having grown from Sh1.713 billion in 2008, mainly crude oil and exported goods worth Sh937.7 million, mainly beef, vegetables and other agricultural produce, according to government figures.

I hope they brought a lot of goodies for our people...investment opportunities and job creation for our youth....I wonder how Kenyatta gets all these leaders to come to Kenya...this shows the influence that the country has in Africa...After all, the emir of Qatar visited 3 of Africa's major economies only...Ethiopia, Kenya and finally SA and had earlier on met with Egypt's president in Doha..

Angola, Morocco, Algeria, Kenya and Ethiopia etc....africa has 54 countries my fren and this puts kenya at the top 10 which to me is what i refer to as "major economies"...when it comes to per capita...Kenya is the only country ukanda huu that is not regarded as a least developed country (LDC) alongside SA Egypt and the likes..tanzania is an LDC hehe...meza wembe

what can I say? I think wewe unadhani major econimies ni zile zilizo na GDP kubwa pekee. this is not the case...i will give you the example of Switzerland and Norway...they are major economies in the world and first world countries too...but their GDP figures are very small when compared to India or China...so yes, Kenya is a major African economy alongside SA Egypt and Nigeria (By the way, Nigeria is questionable because it is only big becoz of oil and a large population but is very backward and poor)

Sasa ziachwe ila Uhuru anajua kucheza na uchumi hyo delegation ni nzito sana hongera uhuru
