Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (born 29 October 1938) is the 24th and current President of Liberia. She served as Minister of Finance under President William Tolbert from 1979 until the 1980 coup d'état, after which she left Liberia and held senior positions at various financial institutions. She placed a very distant second in the 1997 presidential election. Later, she was elected President in the 2005 presidential election and took office on 16 January 2006. Sirleaf is the first and currently only elected female head of state in Africa. She, along with Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman, won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for womens rights to full participation in peace-building work".

Leymah Roberta Gbowee is an African peace activist responsible for organizing a peace movement that brought an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. This led to the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in Liberia, the first African nation with a female president.[SUP][1][/SUP] She, along with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Tawakkul Karman, won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for womens rights to full participation in peace-building work".

Tawakel Karman, also Tawakul,[SUP][1][/SUP] (Arabic: توكل كرمان&#8206, is a Yemeni politician who is a senior member of Al-Islah[SUP][2][/SUP] and a human rights activist who heads the group Women Journalists Without Chains that she created in 2005.[SUP][1][/SUP] She, along with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Gbowee, won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for womens rights to full participation in peace-building work".

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2011

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 is to be divided in three equal parts between Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work. We cannot achieve democracy and lasting peace in the world unless women obtain the same opportunities as men to influence developments at all levels of society.

In October 2000, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325. The resolution for the first time made violence against women in armed conflict an international security issue. It underlined the need for women to become participants on an equal footing with men in peace processes and in peace work in general.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is Africa's first democratically elected female president. Since her inauguration in 2006, she has contributed to securing peace in Liberia, to promoting economic and social development, and to strengthening the position of women. Leymah Gbowee mobilized and organized women across ethnic and religious dividing lines to bring an end to the long war in Liberia, and to ensure women's participation in elections. She has since worked to enhance the influence of women in West Africa during and after war. In the most trying circumstances, both before and during the "Arab spring", Tawakkul Karman has played a leading part in the struggle for women's rights and for democracy and peace in Yemen.

It is the Norwegian Nobel Committee's hope that the prize to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman will help to bring an end to the suppression of women that still occurs in many countries, and to realise the great potential for democracy and peace that women can represent.

Kwa maoni yangu hii kitu inatumika kisiasa zaidi sasa. Ukitizama kwa undani hakuna chochote ambacho ni extraordinary walichofanya sirleaf na wenzake. Hata hii hoja kwamba wamepewa "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for womens rights to full participation in peace-building work" haiingii akilini.

Si lazima kila mwaka nobel peace prize itolewe hata kama hamjapata right candidates.
