Mombasa County Governor Ali Hassan Joho is at risk of being blocked from vying in the forthcoming General Election after Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) rejected the authenticity of his Form Four results slip.
A letter seen by Citizen Digital dated January 26, 2017, addressed to the examinations body by the Department of Criminal Investigations (CID) confirmed that Joho Hassan Ali was not a candidate at Serani Secondary School in the 1992 KCSE examinations as indicated in the results slip.
KNEC disowned the slip indicating that Joho’s purported examination centre- Serani Secondary School index number was 16032 and not 160092 as shown on the slip.
The news comes only two days after the Ministry of Education promised to help IEBC probe the authenticity of political aspirants’ academic certificates.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i assured the electoral body that his ministry will set up a ‘24/7 available’ team to respond to IEBC’s queries relating to politicians’ education qualifications.
Governor Joho, a radical Jubilee government critic, is already embroiled in a series of run-ins with the government.
On Saturday, March 25, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) ordered CFC Stanbic Bank to freeze six of the governor’s bank accounts over tax liability issues.
The tax man is also investigating a bank account held by Governor Joho with Diamond Trust Bank over the same issue.
Early last year, Joho’s family got into serious trouble with the government over tax compliance of cargo freight stations in Mombasa.
The court prevailed over the matter and the cargo handling station – Autoport – was reopened.
The staunch opposition leader and Raila Odinga’s supporter has numerously engaged President Uhuru Kenyatta in nasty altercations over his tenure as the governor of the second biggest town in Kenya- Mombasa.
A fortnight ago, Joho was prevented from attending the re-launching of the Mtongwe ferry services in Mombasa, a function presided over by the president.
President Kenyatta spoke during the occasion, warning Joho of stern consequences if he persists with his ‘nagging antics.’
Governor Joho has repeatedly sworn to campaign against the government, which he accuses of running massive corruption and suppressing counties’ right to run their affairs.
At an ODM rally in Tononoka Grounds in Mombasa on Sunday, March 26, Joho together with opposition leader Raila Odinga said that the government has orchestrated a plan to topple Mombasa as an imports-exports hub in the country by moving the cargo handling business to a proposed inland port in Naivasha.
