Hasheem Thabeet Named to U.S. Basketball Writers Association's All-America Second Team


STORRS, Conn. (March 16, 2009) - Junior Hasheem Thabeet (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) was selected to the 2008-09 U.S. Basketball Writers Association’s All-America Second Team as announced by the association on Monday. Thabeet was named the USBWA District I Player of the Year last week.

This is the first time in his career that Thabeet has been named to the USBWA All-America team. Thabeet leads Connecticut with 10.9 rebounds per game while contributing 13.6 points per contest this season. The junior center earned BIG EAST Co-Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards last week. Thabeet leads the nation with 4.6 blocked shots per game.

Thabeet was among three BIG EAST players to be named to the USBWA All-America Team. Pittsburgh’s DeJuan Blair was selected to the first team while Luke Harangody of Notre Dame was among the second-team honorees.

Three-time USBWA first-team All-American Tyler Hansbrough headlined the list of 10 players honored by the association.

The Huskies were selected as an at-large participant to the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship as the No. 1 seed in the West Region. UConn will take on No. 16 seed Chattanooga at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Tip-off will be 30 minutes following the conclusion of the 12:30 p.m. game between No. 8 seed BYU and No. 9 Texas A&M.
