Somalia's security agency on Monday displayed more than 50 al-Shabaab fighters, mainly youths between 18 and 20 years old, who surrendered to Somali forces in Mogadishu.
Ibrahim Omar Aden, the spokesman of Somali security agency (CID), confirmed the young men surrendered to the government within the last three days and that they will be taken to a rehabilitation center.
"In the last three days we have received 51 young boys who were al-Shabaab fighters. We welcomed them with open arms because they are our generation," Ibrami said.
The fighters complained of lack of food and forced marriages during their time with the Islamic militants.
"We belonged to al-Shabaab for three years. I joined in 2008 as part of the the particular group of assassination (Amniyad). I operated in many parts of the country, but recently I was in Mogadishu," said Mohamed Ali Id, one of the youths who surrendered."
"We decided to give up because we have experienced many problems. Our leaders of al-Shabaab want us each to marry at least four women. Also, we didn't get any food when we were at the frontlines," he added.
This is the largest number of al-Shabaab fighters to surrender to the Somali government within a week.

Only an unequivocal statement form Somalia requesting the assistance of Kenya in eradicating the Al-Shabaab menace will do.
It must be remembered that when Ethiopian forces crushed the Union of Islamic Courts in Somalia, the same was upon an express request by Somalia.

Kenya warns - attacks on 10 Somali towns

Nairobi - Kenya's military warned the residents of 10 towns in Somalia on Tuesday, including the port city of Kismayu, Baidoa and Afgoye near the capital Mogadishu, that they "will be under attack continuously".
Kenyan military spokesperson Emmanuel Chirchir said on his Twitter account that anyone with relatives and friends in the towns listed should be advised accordingly. Chirchir did not answer phone calls from Reuters seeking further comment.
Kenya sent troops into Somalia in mid-October in pursuit of the Somali militants it blames for a series of kidnappings on Kenyan soil and frequent assaults on its security forces along its northern border with the Horn of Africa nation.
The fact the towns listed include places beyond the southern part of Somalia where Kenyan troops are advancing suggests the east African country may step up airstrikes on areas where al-Shabaab rebels have strongholds.
The main objective of Kenyan ground forces is to seize the southern port of Kismayu, as this is a key al-Shabaab stronghold and an important source of funding for the al-Qaeda-linked militants, and to dismantle the rebel network.
"Operation Linda Nchi is on course, advance to Kismayu is on schedule," Chirchir said.
The Kenyan operation is called Linda Nchi, which means "Protect the Nation" in the Swahili language.
Other towns listed by the Kenyan Defence Forces spokesperson included Buale, Afmadow, Baar Dheere, Dinsoor and Jilib, the place hit by a Kenyan airstrike on Sunday.
