Jaji mstaafu wa Mahakama ya Juu ya Uganda, Profesa George Kanyeihamba, amefariki dunia akiwa na umri wa miaka 84. Kifo chake kimethibitishwa na msaidizi wake binafsi aliyejitambulisha kwa jina la Denis, ambaye alisema Profesa alifariki katika Hospitali ya Nakasero alipokuwa akipatiwa matibabu katika chumba cha wagonjwa mahututi (ICU).
Prof. Kanyeihamba alizaliwa tarehe 11 Agosti 1939, na alikuwa mtu mashuhuri katika nyanja za sheria na taaluma nchini Uganda. Alijulikana kwa kusimamia kwa nguvu misingi ya katiba na haki za binadamu. Alishika nyadhifa mbalimbali serikalini chini ya Rais Yoweri Museveni na pia alihudumu kama Jaji wa Mahakama ya Juu kati ya mwaka 1997 hadi 2009.
Hata hivyo, alikuja kuwa mkosoaji mkubwa wa serikali, hasa kuhusu masuala ya katiba. Alikumbukwa pia kwa kuwa miongoni mwa majaji watatu waliopendekeza matokeo ya uchaguzi wa mwaka 2006 yafutwe kutokana na udanganyifu mkubwa.
Spika wa Bunge la Uganda, Anita Among, ametuma salamu za rambirambi akimsifu kwa mchango wake mkubwa kwa taifa. Katika miaka ya mwisho ya maisha yake, aliishi kwa utulivu huku akiendelea kutoa maoni kuhusu masuala ya kitaifa.

Retired Ugandan Supreme Court judge and prominent legal scholar Prof George Kanyeihamba has died, according to a source close to the family.
The circumstances of his death were not immediately confirmed by Monday morning, but his personal assistant, identified only as Denis, said he died at "Nakasero Hospital, where he had been in the ICU for some time."
“Yes, he is no more… he has gone,” a sobbing Denis told Monitor in a brief telephone interview.
Born August 11, 1939, Prof Kanyeihamba was a towering figure in Uganda’s legal and academic circles, famed for his strong defence of constitutionalism and human rights.
He served on the Supreme Court and held senior positions in President Museveni’s government, before later becoming one of the veteran Ugandan leader’s outspoken critics, particularly on constitutional matters.
Kanyeihamba is also remembered for being one of three justices who ruled that Museveni's 2006 disputed re-election was marred by fraud serious enough to warrant annulment.
"Prof Kanyeihamba dedicated his life to serving the nation through various cabinet positions, his role on the bench, and his legal practice. May the good Lord provide comfort to all those who are grieving and grant his soul eternal rest," Parliament Speaker Anita Among eulogized on X, formerly Twitter.
After serving on the Supreme Court from 1997 to 2009, he largely maintained a low public profile in recent years, though he occasionally voiced critical opinions on national issues amid persistent reports of declining health due to advanced age.
