A photo has been circulating online showing a young woman standing on a car, with claims that it is an image of Zambia’s former First Lady, Beatrice (Betty) Kaunda, taken in 1955.
Verdict
After a thorough review by JamiiCheck, it has been confirmed that the woman in the photo is not Betty Kaunda.
A Google Reverse Image Search reveals that the picture was taken in the 1970s by Ghanaian photojournalist James Barnor.
Further investigation shows that the photo is titled “Woman posing on James Barnor's car, Accra, c.1970.” According to Sotheby’s:
“After moving to the United Kingdom, Barnor returned to Ghana and began photographing people on the streets rather than in his studio. This artwork shows that by the 1970s, Ghanaian women were embracing natural hairstyles, perhaps influenced by post-independence pride and the Black consciousness movements in the United States. The subject’s pose symbolises freedom—not only from colonial rule or racism, but also the newfound independence of women.”
To further confirm that the photo was taken in Ghana during the 1970s, another image captured by Barnor shows the same car with the same registration plate, “GR 4506.”
