Kampala, Uganda — Iran has called on Uganda to use its position as chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to condemn what it describes as aggression by Israel and the United States amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking to NTV in Kampala, Iran’s Ambassador to Uganda, Majid Safar, said Uganda has a responsibility to speak out because it currently leads the bloc, of which Iran is a member.
“We call upon all countries, especially our neighbors, Islamic nations, members of the Non-Aligned Movement, and particularly Uganda as the head of the bloc, to speak out against these acts,” Safar said. “This war does not just hurt Iran. It threatens the peace and security of the entire world.”
Iran has already petitioned the United Nations Security Council to take action over what it calls Israeli and U.S. aggression.
The conflict is also raising economic concerns globally. Analysts say, tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States could push global oil prices higher, with potential consequences for East Africa.
Countries such as Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania import nearly all their refined fuel from the Middle East, making them highly vulnerable to supply disruptions.
The developments come as diplomatic channels appear stalled, with Washington, Jerusalem, and Tehran showing little sign of entering dialogue in the near future, raising fears of wider regional and global consequences.
