IMF: Ethiopia's GDP to hit $78B this year, Kenya at $75B

There is no distribution of wealth in ethiopia

Let me Summarise what i understand about ethiopian economy

Ethiopia has less money for projects than
Kenya or Tanzania but the only thing making Ethiopia Grow is that they are Autocratic ....they decided to follow the chinese system...

In that In Ethiopia their parliament has all its members coming from the same party

If they want to Construct a road today that will pass through route A which is full of Housing They dont /wont have much resistance their decision is final(government) that is

So with this kind of powee the goveenment has established areas that will add value to the ethiopian economy and put all their money in these sectors neglecting the rest.....they dont have opposition unlike here in Kenya

If government today wants a railway to pass through A
They will get sued or Halted
And rerouted to B then C then finally D 5yrs later

While in Ethiopia the projecy will be already done....like their SGR and GIBE DAM

.......they will have better growth but the wealth will not reach the people in the short term but long run unlike here it will be both but will take a longertime to achieve
Sam, I beg to differ with u on this, sorry that lately we have not been agreeing on certain issues.

Is there a country- a well functioning country with no wealth distribution? That must be a terribly dysfunctional country.
May I tell u that in fact in Ethiopia, even with its small economy (small relative to its immense size), has a better wealth distribution relative to all the other countries in the continent ( cant prove that) And that is the characteristic of nearly all the centrally planned economies.

Wealth disparity is very low in Ethiopia, probably less than any other country in Africa ( Libya is a collapsed state now). That is not to say that the people enjoy better standards of living however. The national income is too small, and it is spread too thin to cushion the citizens needs and also to defray the other key govts expenditures like the ones u have mentioned above......the mega infrastructural developments.

I presented that source in order to challenge the false, widely held assumption among your compatriots, who have not even been to kenya that food and shelter is pretty expensive here. They would proceed to argue further that it is bcos of the shortage of both, that all the best lands are possessed by a few.
The cost of living in Kenya and Tanzania is more or less the same. Unless u present the evidence to confirm that the prices of the basket goods are muchc more costly in Kenya.

The present trajectory of economic development in the region is impressive, it portrays a bright future for all the countries. However, let us not kid ourselves....or rather u Tanzanians do not kid yourselves that your economy is the same as Kenya's.

Look at the size of both economies first, proceed to break them down into different aspects and scrutinize the levels of progress in each....the economies are simply not exactly the same.

Let's assume that the difference between the price of basic goods and services is negligibly low. The median income, however, as presented by Numbeo is larger for Tanzania which brings us to the same conclusion.

It's having the same idea that the GDP valued in USD is a better or more precise way of comparing the size of an economy. That is as rough and as obsolete as it can get.

Equatorial Guinea has a higher GDP per Capita than China. So? Are you going to end up there? Or further dissect?

Look at how the main article that we are discussing here, explained the shrinkage of South African GDP. South African GDP has been growing since 2011 but recorded a lower value in 2016. Locally, the amount and value of products in South Africa has grown in those years vis a vis decreasing by over 30%. So, this too had to be dissected.

The Purchasing Power Parity GDP is the one that more accurately measure the amount of goods and services produced by an economy. Not the market exchange rate GDP. This is widely used nowadays and is getting easily calculated. It measures over 150 price headings with a total of over 1200 prices in an economy. This is what makes China the largest economy followed by EU and US in that order and not vice versa. The value of goods and services produced by China is bigger than that of US. The Construction sector GDP of China in 2015 was the same as that of US (roughly) using the market exchange GDP and was six times larger than that of US using PPP. I chose this sector because globally now, China is way ahead (obvious case) in construction. It's the biggest construction economy by activity and production. But due to exchange rate manipulations, its value almost the same as US's.

Now, coming to TZ versus Kenya, our GDPs are the same based on PPP.

It is so lame and shame to call a poor country with GDP of US$. 68.91 a 'Power house' or 'economic giant.

Often I see Kenyans and their media embarrassing themselves in front of other nations by labelling themselves with these words. One notable example is a thread in Nairaland forum,Kenyans comparing their country with Nigeria using these words 'East African economic giant','economic power house', a capitalist country and other rubbish.

Unfortunately it seem Nigerians were in favour with Tanzania. They spoke gently about TZ from its people, beauty, music, culture, tourism etc. From that spot Kenyans started to slum Tz jealously with the historical issues of ujamaa and capitalism,English incompetence of Tz, and other wrong information about TZ.
Good thing is Nigerians are well informed about TZ especially in this internet era. So they rejected their lies with references

Hahaha they are so bitter

Haya, hizo tafiti zao zililenga nini haswa?

- National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
- The Office of the Chief Government Statistician of Zanzibar.
- The Department of Economics of the University of Dar es Salaam.

Kumbe unategemea takwimu alafu unajiita umeitembea Tanzania ...

And there you go you just wanted your ego stroked and as per your assertions am opined to deduce that the nigerians did a good job since you seem to now have a delusional feel of grandeur and egregious self importance.Lemmi use this anecdote to clear some air here, you have this emaciated cat which may be afflicted by Feline virus it looks like its going to die any moment but the moment you stroke its face and back it will start to purr and raise its back totally relaxed and no worry of whatever it may become of it, it just feels overglorious. Nobody denies that the Gdp as a measure of the size of the economy is inadequate. But even with its imprecisity, it is still very useful for determining the value of all the goods and services a country produces over a given period.

The Gdp ppp is simply a measure of the amount of goods and services one can buy in a country using the local currency.
Now, what I find amusing about your criticism of the Gdp as imprecise and obsolette whilst the PPP as the more reliable measure of " the amount of goods and services produced in a country", (which is completely wrong!) is that the PPP is in fact tthe derivative of the Gdp. So if the Gdp is "unreliable and obsolette", so is the PPP!

The E. Guinea vs China example u have presented above sadly does not apply in the Kenya vs Tanzania case, and it is totally irrelevant.
We have many times scrutinized the various facets of these two E. African economic giants- and I think I stated somewhere on this very topic that both the obsolette and and the latest methods for metricizing economies in their various perspectives have consistently proved without a doubt that Kenya is ahead of Tanzania.

The only things you have in your hearts and mind is bias, envy and jealous when you hear tz is mentioned. I wonder where does it come from. This is a thread in Nairaland forum I guess started by a Kenyan, but instead of sticking into its goal, Kenyans started using all the energy compare themselves with Tz and spread lies/talk shit when Nigerians started apprise Tz.

It was funny because no Tz commented anything but it was like Nigerians behind Tz. Fact does not lie.

Bwahaha! Do be honest, so the Nigerians also say that Tanzania is the wealthiest, the most developed, the most advanced etc country in the oriental Africa?
All they say is that Tanzanians are beautiful and docile ....and the latter shouldnt be taken as a compliment.

And those phrases, superpower, powerhouse, economic giant/tiger, the tags which u seem to be miffed about were accorded to Kenya, not by Kenyans themselves, but by the experts in geopolitics and economics A powerhouse exists in every region of the world. And in our part of the world is definately Kenya!

You deride its economy of $68bn (or is it 75bn?) as too insignificant to warrant those titles, but it the largest in region!

Just go to that Numbeo page that you claimed to have shown that the cost of living in Tanzania is higher. Compare all the prices to the bottom and see what is the last indicator. Also note the local purchasing power of these two economies. For the sake of sticking to the main point, I chose to neglect the difference, but you seem to be a bit arrogant and showing (to a lesser degree) some signs of mind molestation.

I am sure that, you lack some information about GDP.
  • All GDPs are first calculated in local currency. This is the basic point.
  • GDP (US$) is the calculated GDP based on the exchange rate between US$ and the local currency.
Now, about GDP (PPP),as quoted from the ICP page:

International Comparison Program (ICP)

The ICP is a worldwide statistical initiative led by the World Bank under the auspices of the United Nations Statistical Commission, with the main objective of providing comparable price and volume measures of gross domestic product (GDP) and its expenditure aggregates among countries within and across regions. Through a partnership with international, regional, sub-regional and national agencies, the ICP collects and compares price data and GDP expenditures to estimate and publish purchasing power parities (PPPs) of the world’s economies.

Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs)

PPPs measure the total amount of goods and services that a single unit of a country’s currency can buy in another country. The PPP between countries A and B measures the number of units of country A’s currency required to purchase a basket of goods or services in country A as compared to one unit of country B’s currency to purchase a similar basket of goods in country B. PPPs can thus be used to convert the cost of a basket of goods and service into a common currency while eliminating price level differences across countries. In other words, PPPs equalize the purchasing power of currencies. Due to large differences in price levels across economies, market exchange rate- converted GDP does not accurately measure the relative sizes of economies and the levels of material well-being. PPPs make it possible to compare the output of economies and the welfare of their inhabitants in ‘real’ terms, thus controlling for price level differences across countries.
Source:International Comparison Program (ICP)

PPP is an exchange rate regime just as is US$. We don't trade that much in US$ or other foreign currencies. There is a considerable production of goods and services that is based solely in local currency.

The thing is
What most Tanzanians especially darcity dont understand is Kenya is not Nigeria

We have a larger foreign reserve than Nigeria

We have The exact Equall National Budgets as Nigeria
22.3bn$--kenya
23.4bn$--nigeria

Kenya has 48mn people
Nigeria has 193mn people

Nigeria is 800,000km2
Kenya is 589,000km2

That being Said
Nigeria is 492bn$ economy
Kenya is 74.8bn$ economy

Yes its true we are far when compared with Nigeria

But the difference is Kenya is Well Diversified in Every sector we just lack funds

Nigeria Heavily Depend on Oil Revenues to do most of its development and Recurrent expenditure

By 2020 Kenya will be 102bn$

Nigeria will be 530bn$ since its growing at between negative 1.8% to positive 2%

Yes Kenya is growing at 5.9%

Nigerias Security Expenditure is
3.9bn$

Kenyas Security Expenditure is
2.2bn$

Now let me show you something here

Greece
And
Turkey
In 1988....
1495902874537.png

Sure
NIGERIA IS AHEAD OF KENYA
BUT SO WAS GREECE IN 2003

BUT LOOK AT HOW TURKEY IS DOING BETTER NOW

In 14yrs Since Erdogan became PM then President which was in 2002
Turkeys GDP has tripled aided mainly by infrastructure developemnt, military development and Agticulture.....all this Uhuru Kenyatta is now forming a foundation for Kenya he is busy globtrotting building a permanent foundation for Kenyan Growth
1495902938952.png

.
.
.
We now have the most advance constitution in Africa After SA,NAMIBIA and Bots

We now have the most Development friendly enviroment Ethiopian Is Autocratic so it cant be long term And Rwanda is too small a country for massive investments in Africa ....
Kenya now Yenye Unacheka Tukisema
Economic Powerhouse may as well grow 3times or 4 times over to 300bn$ by 2030 considering by 2020 we will be 101bn$

SA in 1985 was 102bn$ by 2000 SA economy was 245bn$ it has been more or less stagnating or experiencing minimal growth

SA heavily depends on
-Agric
-Vehicle
-Logistics
-research
-Service and Reforms

Kenya right now plans to put 20mn acres under irrigation by 2030
We now have
Volvo
Volkwagen
Toyota
Isuzu
Porsche
Land rover
Etc Setting up shop in Kenya yes Foundation....

Kenya
FYI
Kenya
Ethiopia
South Africa and
Nigeria are the Highest importers of Both used and New Vehicles

1495903531080.png

Infact darcity Tanzania is buying so minimal amount of vehicles that it is categorised as "Others" on the importer Section
