Whatever dude! All I've learned from this exchange (and what's clear here so far) is that only Wal-mart Supercenters can be rightfully referred to as supermarkets. That said, its obvious that both of us were ignorant of the distinctions that exist between the various store types used in the Wal-mart chain store system. So, what that means is that none of us was (exactly) correct in our contrasting claims about the existence (or not) of "a single major chain supermarket" in Detroit. In other words, the truth turned out to be more subtle than initially figured, and basically both you and me were WRONG!

Hahahaha!! What a way to spin! But, no, speak for yourself dude. You were wrong and you just can't bring yourself up to admit that you were wrong so you have to bring me in in your admission. You were WRONG too in so far as you were unable to tell apart so-called "Wal-mart store" from Wal-mart Supercenters (and probably Wal-mart Neighboorhood Markets too) in the list of "Wal-mart stores" you posted above.

What that means is that, you were ignorant of the fact that not all Wal-mart stores are alike, and that is enough to prove that whatever claims you've made in this thread about there being (or not) of "a single major chain supermarket" in Detroit ARE simply WRONG!

In America, when they speak of chain supermarkets, they don't generally mean discount stores like Walmart or Target or Costco, just to name a few. Click on the links to see specific examples of "supermarket chains" http://publix.com/about/CompanyOverview.do and http://www.thekrogerco.com/

And I wasn't Ignorant of the fact that not all Walmart stores are alike. I live 3 minutes away from a Walmart Supercenter. I go there almost every other day. When I was in college I worked at a regular Walmart store (not a supercenter) during summer vacation. I know exactly what you can get at a supercenter and what you can't get at a non supercenter.

A Wal-mart supercenter also happens to be a supermarket in the true sense of the term. I would bet chain stores like Target, Costco etc which you mention as so-called "general" discount stores may also have various types or categories of stores according to size, variety of merchandise and services offered in each store, etc. So the question is how many supermarkets must a chain store have in order to qualify as a "major supermarket chain"?

But regardless of this observation, just following the logic in your responses, and given the facts as we've seen in this thread, its obvious that your initial claim as to whether or not there exists a Wal-mart Supercenter within the vicinity of Detroit city limits just isn't supported. You don't need to make any kind of admission: the logical flow of your arguments is all what it takes.

Supercenters are usually located in the suburbs or the outskirts of the city. Try to find a Walmart supercenter within the city limits of Atlanta and you won't find none. They are all in the burbs - Dunwoody, Roswell, S.W.A.T.S., Alpharetta, Duluth, Marrietta, Acworth, Jonesboro, etc.

Supercenters require so much space that can't be found within the city limits and most powers that be (land and zonning commissions) are very careful not to give permission for Walmart to build their supercenters in areas where there is already much congestion.

So it is not at all surprisng for there not to be a Walmart supercenter within Detroit's city limits because of the opposition that they generally attract.

But as shown in the list that I provided, you did see that there was at least one Supercenter within 12 miles of zip code 48201 which clearly squares with what I just said above regarding the suburbs.
