8% of the population aged 5 and older reported having some level of difficulty in at least one area: seeing, hearing, communicating, remembering, or concentrating, walking or climbing steps, and washing or dressing. (Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) 2022).

Aisha (pseudonym), a mother in Ikungi District, had lost hope for her 12-year-old daughter with vision impairment. “I didn’t know where to start with my child’s treatment-I was waiting for a miracle,” she said. After participating in AGO’s screening program, her standard 5 daughter was referred to Makiungu Hospital for treatment. Today, Aisha has hope, knowing that her child might regain her vision after many years. "The doctor told me my child might see again after so many years.” Your support made this possible.

Recent Achievements and Updates:

Impactful Screenings: AGO’s team, in partnership with Strømme Foundation in Tanzania and health professionals, screened 15 children for visual, hearing, and cognitive challenges. As a result, 6 pupils were diagnosed with physical challenges, while 4 required psychological support, individualized education plans, and one-on-one assistance. Regarding visual impairment, 1 boy was prescribed sunglasses, and 1 girl required further treatment. Additionally, 3 pupils needed specialized medical care and were referred to the regional hospital for further assessment and treatment. Personalized interventions are now in place to ensure these children receive the appropriate care and support.

Raising Awareness: Through a radio interview with Standard FM, we’ve been able to raise awareness about special education opportunities, reaching out to parents and caregivers across the region. Thanks to this initiative, many families are now aware of special schools like Ikungi Mchanganyiko and Siuyu Primary Public Schools, which offer free education for children with intellectual impairments.

Family Outreach: We’ve also reached 17 families in Kikio Ward, Ikungi District about disability rights, empowering them with the knowledge to better support their children.

Children supported assistive devices: Two pupils received eyeglasses to aid their vision, and two others were provided with wheelchairs to enhance their mobility.

With the help of partners like Stromme Foundation in Tanzania, we are advancing girls' rights and promoting gender equity – we are helping to build resilient futures for girls and youth in Tanzania. Thank you for being a key part of our mission.
