Hamas-Israel declares a 12hr ceasefire

Israeli military and Hamas said on Saturday that they would observe a 12-hour ceasefire from 8:00am (0500 GMT), but a longer-term truce remained elusive for now. Hamas said that it and other militant groups in Gaza had reached "national consensus on a humanitarian truce" and Israel later confirmed that it would observe what it called "a humanitarian window in the Gaza Strip".

Earlier, US secretary of state John Kerry, speaking from Cairo, said that efforts to broker a longer halt to the fighting had so far yet to bear fruit. He arrived in Paris on Saturday where France's foreign minister Laurent Fabius was to host a meeting later in the day of counterparts from the United States, Britain, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Turkey and the EU.

Serikali ya Israel na wapiganaji wa Hamas wamekubaliana kusitisha vita kwa masaa 12 katika eneo la Gaza kutokana na maswala ya kibinadaamu kuanzia leo asubuhi.

Taarifa ya Israel imesema kuwa raia wa Palestina katika eneo la Gaza ambao walikuwa wameonywa kuondoka katika makaazi yao wasithubutu kurudi na kwamba Israel italipiza kisasi iwapo itashambuliwa.
Awali serikali ya Israel ilikataa makubaaliano ya kusitisha kwa mda mrefu yaliopendekezwa na waziri wa maswala ya kigeni nchini marekani John Kerry .

Bwana Kerry amesema atendelea kushirikiana na katibu mkuu wa umoja wa mataifa Ban ki Moon ili kuafikiwa makubaliano ya kusitisha vita ya siku saba.

Bwana Ban amesema kuwa vita vinavyoendelea vinaonyesha wazi kwamba hakutakuwa na suluhu ya kijeshi na kwamba uzuiaji wa Gaza ni sharti usitshwe. Zaidi ya raia mia nane wa palestina wameuawa pamoja na wa Israel zaidi 30.
