NAIROBI, Kenya, May 16 – A two-kilogram packet of maize flour will cost Sh90 from the current Sh160 by Tuesday following a subsidy agreement between the government and millers.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett says the government will use Sh6 billion in this subsidy program that will see millers access 90kg of maize at Sh2,300.
The government is expecting about five million bags importation of maize through this program by importers.
Bett says the move is a temporary intervention that will continue until stock normalises in about four to five months when harvest of the long rains gets in.
He says the country is also seeking more maize in Zambia and Ethiopia as the government tries mopping out any maize through negotiated prices.
“We have negotiated with importers, and will are only accepting bags worth Sh3600 per 90Kg bag, we will foot the upper cost for the millers,” he said.
Currently, the cost of 90Kg bag is at Sh4,600 in the country and Sh4,300 in the region.
He says the country is also seeking more maize in Zambia and Ethiopia as the government tries mopping out any maize through negotiated prices.
Moreover, the government has waived duty on the importation of sugar and milk products In a bid to reduce the price of the commodities.
“Late last year, Kenya faced severe drought that prolonged to 2017 destabilising supply,” he stressed.

Have seen it in the news, from tomorrow the price will be 90/- for 2kgs and 47/- for 1kg. I've heard they are doing the same for sugar and milk.

Has anyone of you watched Zoo(tv series)? One company catalyzed an epidemic then offered a solution ended up being seen as the hero and made a tonne of profit afterwards....

So the maize millers caused a shortage, then just when the time was right, a ship waiting somewhere appeared, and now the govt us going to pay them money for every 2kg they sell at 90bob.... Remember in a good day its supposed to be 70 per 2kg...

Then on the other side, a govt that has failed to ensure food security by holding at least 3months worth of maize in a capitalist country has decided to directly subsidise maize using our own taxes that we overpay every single day from our salaries and anything we buy.. They are doing it for 6 months, just enough time to get re-elected...like seriously, are people blind? Am I the only one seeing this politrics..
These people are importing cheap maize from these countries, why are they still selling it at the same price of 160 where the govt will pay them money so the customer can get it at 90sh.... These millers have for long since independence tried so many tricks in the book to get extra profit... Being experienced at this they must have seen drought comming... They could have imported the maize way ahead of time...what is to say this wasn't a well orchestrated man made crisis by all those millers in that list collaborating with some govt officials

Propaganda.... The country experienced drought for about 5 months so the shortage is just but a post-drought consequence
