Irungu Kang'ata, the governor of Murang'a, has declared that he will vie for county governor again in the 2027 general election on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
He met with UDA party leader President William Ruto in the Kandara constituency of Murang'a on Sunday before making his historic declaration.
Despite having a long-standing relationship with President Ruto, the governor hinted that his action was motivated by "instances of confrontation and tension" that went against his political beliefs.
He claimed that the perception of politics moving toward intolerance as a result of current political occurrences undermines the benefits of maintaining democracy.
There are times when sincere disagreements arise, as is common in public life. on a statement, he added, "My divergence is not personal; it is grounded in principle—specifically on matters of political strategy, engagement with citizens, and policy priorities."
