The Government of Uganda has announced plans to make teachers among the highest paid public servants in a bid to attract top-performing students to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in education.
Under the proposed plan, teachers on the government payroll are set to receive significantly higher salaries, with science teachers expected to earn a basic monthly salary of UGX 8 million, while humanities teachers will earn at least UGX 7.5 million per month.
The move is aimed at making the teaching profession more competitive and attractive to high-performing students who often opt for careers in fields such as medicine, engineering, law and business due to better pay and career prospects.
