A week after disconnecting electricity he had extended to his village following his election loss , a move that many interpreted as a symbolic political break - outgoing Mawokota South MP Yusuf Nsibambi has now formalized what observers say was widely anticipated: a switch to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Earlier today at the NRM Secretariat along Kyadondo Road in Kampala, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, officially unveiled Nsibambi as the partyβs newest entrant, confirming his departure from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Addressing journalists, Among revealed that Nsibambiβs crossover is part of a broader trend.
βBeyond the Independents who have joined us, we also have Members of Parliament from different political parties who have approached me in my office expressing readiness to join,β she said, hinting at more potential defections.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong praised the Speaker and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) for her mobilization efforts, commending her as a βgood fisherβ of the party.
Nsibambi, a veteran legislator and former FDC whip who lost his seat in the recently concluded election, described his political transition as a process shaped by reflection.
βI will actually come to the Secretary General at an opportune time. My face has a few bruises from having gone through this last election that I lost in a misguided way. But when I clean it up, I will say itβs now clear,β he said.
However, According to Parliamentary Watch, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament dismissed the defection as inconsequential, arguing that it does not weaken the opposition but instead relieves it of what was described as a βpretentious character.β
Is this a matter of ideology or survival politics at play?
