The early hours of April 3, 2026, Soroti City was shaken by a tragic act of violence that claimed the life of a hardworking mobile money agent, Patricia Kokunda, aged 32.
Like many others striving to make an honest living, Kokunda had set out for work before sunrise. At around 4:40am, as she approached the area near Goalman Supermarket along Station Road, her routine journey turned deadly.
Armed assailants intercepted her, forcefully pulled her from the vehicle she was travelling in, and robbed her of money believed to be proceeds from her mobile money business.
In the course of the robbery, she was shot.

She was rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries—cutting short a life defined by resilience and hard work.
The brutal killing sparked swift action from security agencies. Police launched an operation that has so far led to the arrest of four suspects believed to be behind the attack.According to the police spokes person,Kituma Lusoke, The suspects have been identified as Okello Alex, Onego Felix, Epeu Simon ,also known as Iboda—and Elacu Alfred, who is suspected to have been the gunman.
Authorities also recovered part of the stolen money, approximately seven million shillings, along with the victim’s phone, which had been discarded after the attack. The arrests were made across different districts, pointing to what investigators believe could be a coordinated criminal network.
Police say investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend any additional suspects and fully establish the circumstances surrounding the crime.
Kokunda’s death has once again brought into sharp focus the growing risks faced by mobile money agents across Uganda. Often handling large sums of cash and operating in vulnerable conditions, many continue to work without adequate security protections.
