Health officials in Kagadi District are on high alert after a measles outbreak killed five children, causing fear among residents.
The disease has been reported in Kyakabadima, Kyaterekera, and Ndaiga sub-counties. Most of the affected are children between one and five years old. Health workers say the outbreak started in February 2026 and has been spreading in these areas.
According to district health educator Aisha Justine Tumwebaze, tests carried out at the Uganda Virus Research Institute confirmed the cases as measles.
Health teams have now increased vaccination and awareness campaigns to stop the disease from spreading further. Residents have been advised to avoid crowded places, while sick children are being given Vitamin A as part of treatment.
Parents are being urged to make sure their children are vaccinated and to take them to a health facility immediately if they show any symptoms.
Measles is a highly contagious disease. It usually starts with fever, cough, a runny nose, sore throat, and red eyes. Later, patients may develop a rash and small white spots in the mouth.
