A blast near a shopping mall in Johannesburg has killed at least two people, police in South Africa have said.

The explosion happened at a store close to the Eastgate centre, according to Wilfred Kgasago, the chief superintendent of Ekurhuleni Police.

He said the cause of the blast, which injured at least three people, is not yet known, although a spokesman for the mall said a bomb had exploded opposite its premises.

No part of the shopping centre collapsed and the centre was "trading as normal", the spokesman said.
The Eastgate mall, around 9km (5.5 miles) from Johannesburg city centre, contains more than 270 stores, including a number of international retailers, according to its website.

The blast happened at a shop which buys gold and jewellery, according to local news reports.
