Fastjet announced this morning that it has signed an agreement that, wholly removes Fly540 Kenya from the Fastjet Group. This will probably mark an end to legal disputes that have frustrated Fastjets plans to penetrate Kenyas air transport market.
Ed Winter
Disposing of our investment in Fly540 Kenya allows us to pursue our priority objective of creating Fastjet Kenya as a new entity, said Ed Winter, Chairman and CEO of Fastjet.
Fastjet acquired Fly540 from its former owners, Lonrho Aviation, in 2012. The plan was to use Fly540 operating licences in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Angola to launch an Africa-wide low cost carrier. Kenya was very important to Fastjets strategy due to its bigger market compared to the other three Fly540 countries.
The Lonrho deal went smoothly in Tanzania, Ghana and Angola, but Fastjet was unable to take control of Fly540 Kenya due to court cases filed in Kenya and the UK. Fastjet quickly modified its strategy and began operations in neighboring Tanzania, where the
first scheduled flight took off in November 2012. Fly540 Kenya continued operating independently and is even expanding its route network through a related airline, FlySax.
