The Ministry of Agriculture has directed an immediate reduction in the prices of maize seeds under a new subsidy program aimed at lowering the cost of farm inputs for Kenyan farmers.

In order to give farmers access to seeds at affordable rates, the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service communicated a Presidential order that called for an immediate decrease in input prices.

A 1 kg package of maize seed would retail for Ksh.260 under the new pricing structure, while a 2 kg packet will cost Ksh.525.

Farmers will also be able to purchase larger packages at reduced costs; a 10 kg bag will cost Ksh.2,625, while a 25 kg bag would cost Ksh.6,560.

Additionally, the government has given Kenya Seed Company Ksh.2 billion to help launch the maize seed subsidy scheme immediately.

The decision, according to Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, is part of a major government intervention targeting increased food production and affordability, especially as the farmers embark on the planting season.

The decision is expected to boost maize production, which remains a staple food in Kenya, while also stabilizing prices of maize flour in the long term if supply improves.
