Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed as the Senate Deputy Minority Whip following changes to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leadership in the Senate.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the changes during a plenary sitting after receiving a letter dated July 16 from Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo communicating the decision. The letter indicated that ODM senators had resolved to remove Sifuna from the position and elect Migori Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch as his replacement with immediate effect.
According to the communication tabled in the Senate, the leadership changes were backed by minutes of a Minority Party meeting and a signed resolution by ODM senators. Speaker Kingi confirmed that the procedural documents had been submitted, paving the way for the official recognition of the new Deputy Minority Whip.
Responding to the announcement, Sifuna thanked the Senate Minority leadership and his colleagues for the opportunity to serve in the position. He also congratulated Senator Eddy Oketch on his appointment and wished him success in the role. Despite the leadership changes, Sifuna remains the elected Senator for Nairobi County.
The latest reshuffle comes amid ongoing political realignments within ODM and follows recent changes to the party's leadership structures. It is expected to further influence internal party dynamics as political parties continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
