The Centre for Counselling, Nutrition and Health Care (COUNSENUTH) is an indigenous non-governmental, non-profit organization in Tanzania established in 1998 with its offices in Dar es Salaam. COUNSENUTH is dedicated to improving the quality of lives of vulnerable groups through provision of preventive health education, counselling and nutritional services, by focusing on active community involvement.

COUNSENUTH in collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation will implement a project which will use Participatory Performance Improvement Approach (PPIA) to support selected poor performing secondary schools. The project will focus on schools with no track record of transitioning girl students from O-Level to A-Level. Along with addressing performance challenges, the project aims to integrate ways to equip girls with soft skills that will help them to unlock their potential, build their confidence and prepare them for higher education or work.

COUNSENUTH is inviting applications to fill the position of Project Coordinator, which will be based in Tunduru- Ruvuma region.

This position reports to: COUNSENUTH Director of Programs

Position Summary:
The project Coordinator will work closely with the districts education sector to facilitate some intervention that will contribute to improve the performance of students in selected schools. The role will involve advocating for action that will improve performance of students especially girls while working with teachers, students and parents. The Coordinator will use the participatory approach in facilitating the project. She/he will be required to work in rural communities with people of different cultural backgrounds. The incumbent must have very good interpersonal skills, highly motivated, creative, team player with high degree of integrity and must be fluent in both written and spoken Kiswahili and English.

Scope of work and responsibilities:
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the comprehensive project that is intended to improve performance of students in selected schools
  • Work with the District Education Officer to develop strategies and work plan for improving performance in the selected schools and ensure that the project plans are part of districts plans.
  • Supervise, orient, coordinate and provide relevant support to the project interns/volunteers
  • Work with the project interns/volunteers to prepare their work plan; and communicate actively with them about their responsibilities and logistics related to work.
  • Facilitate participatory meetings and events that will support, inspire and inform students especially girls about the skills needed to pursue higher education and other opportunities.
  • Participate in relevant meetings at all levels and work with the teams to reach overall goal of improving performance in the selected schools.
  • Prepare activity reports.
  • Through participatory approaches, support schools to identify barriers to performance and facilitate them to come up with do-able solutions and take appropriate actions.
  • Develop a proper mechanism of documenting experience which will be used to monitor progress and analyze information of the project.
  • Ensure that the project progress, lessons learned, best practices, events and other knowledge management activities are well documented and shared timely.
  • Work with M&E Officer at COUNSENUTH to conduct project monitoring and evaluation
  • Work with consultants and other stakeholders as need arise
  • Prepare and timely submission of monthly, quarterly and annual project reports.
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by COUNSENUTH authority.


Qualifications and Experience

The applicant must have:

  • A Master’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Gender, Community Development or any other relevant social science degree.
  • At least 3 years working experience in development programs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
  • Knowledge and ability to carry out both quantitative and qualitative research and documentation.
  • Experience in community engagement, mobilization and capacity building process.
  • Experience in working with the Government institutions, community partners and other key stakeholders; and building partnership.
  • Excellent project management skills with proven experience in participatory approaches including project design, development, implementation and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ability to supervise, mentor and coach others;
  • Persistent motivator who can mobilize various stakeholders and beneficiaries to deliver desired results
  • Creative, problem solving and ability to work under tight deadlines
