Okay, I think we are making some progress here...
We have forced government's hand, and now Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda has decided to come out and reiterate the need for a new constitution: "I believe there is no difficulty in this [matter]. As Prime Minister, I am ready to take the initiative to advise the president on the formation of the team to look into the modalities of having a new constitution," he said.
Prof. Chris Maina Peter, the Head of School of Law, University of Dar es Salaam, too--had a very nice piece in today's local paper [GUARDIAN ON SUNDAY] detailing why we need a new constitution. You can read the entire piece here:"Constitution has no religion or political party-it belongs to all of us"
Let's keep the pressure on, folks!
Please download the attached Printable Petition/PDF (make as many copies as you wish), then help us collect signatures from the people who have no access to a computer at home. Our goal is to collect at least 5 million signature by the end of 2011.
P.S. We have purchased a new domain: http://www.katibampya.org ( but the site is still under construction). Once completed, you will be able to log in and submit your comments/suggestions on what you'd like to see included in the new constitution.
P.P.S. Please scan and send back the collected signatures (via katibatanzania@gmail.com) for collation. And if you need/prefer a physical address, please feel free to contact me and I'll provide one for you.
Our online petition is still active. If you haven't signed it yet, please do so. Sign it here:TUNAHITAJI KATIBA MPYA Petition
You can join us on facebook, too! Here's our facebook page:http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000732881226#!/pages/Katiba-Mpya-Tanzania/112231008845580
