Waste generated in Dar es salaam and other urban developments is certainly a challenge and an opportunity. Organic waste can go for power generation, plastic waste for recycling, electronic waste for recycling, etc. There needs to be a mechanism such that the waste collectors pay for collecting the same for being able to generate products from which they earn enough to make it viable. We do have informal collections of empty plastic bottles for small gains. Scavengers do their bit in garbage heaps. Plastic, though inert chemically but with ecological challenges, electronic waste having challenges of its own kind, etc. may be handled professionally in manner benefitting one disposing and also incentivizing waste disposal in win-win situation for collectors as well as disposers. It may also reduce the burden on the municipalities and on the pockets of the tax payer if feasible.
