Azam TV Launches in Kenya


Are you suggesting that an average Joe cannot question Azam's business model?

In any case, after reading a few other sources, I have figured out what Azam's business model was and it is as follows: KPL and FKF have been fighting over who has the right to run the top tier league.

Azam thought that KPL does not have rights to run the Kenyan league. They thought FIFA would rule in favor of FKF and disband KPL. So they decided to pour their money on FKF . Because KPL has a contract with Supersport, Azam assumed that Supersport will be out once KPL is disbanded.

Unfortunately for them, yesterday FIFA ruled in favor of KPL. But KPL already has a contract with supersport for 5 years. So now Azam are stuck televising a lower tier league instead of the KPL. But they are still trying to muscle their way into KPL.

Personally I do not care whether KPL or Supersport has rights to telvise the leagues in Kenya. In fact I would like it if both of them have rights. It means more money for Kenyan leagues.

Azam thought they were getting the top tier league with teams like Gor Mahia, Tusker, AFC Leopards. Instead because of the FIFA ruling yesterday, they getting the second tier league with teams like Kariobangi Sharks (timu ya mitaani) and Posta Rangers.

The article below explains that FIFA has given KPL the mandate to run the top tier league. And since KPL have a contract with Supersport it means that only Supersport has rights to the top league. Azam are now stuck televising the second tier league which is not what they wanted. However it is good for Kenya to have two big TV contracts.

It is also possible that Sam Nyamweya, the FKF chairman tricked Azam by promising them the top tier league. He probably promised Azam that FIFA would disband KPL and thus remove Supersport. Nyamweya is a real charlatan. Azam have no idea how treacherous he is. Its possible Azam now regret getting into business with Nyamweya.

Football Kenya Federation scored one against Kenya Premier League Ltd despite the latter enjoying possession for big part of the massive contest

It has been tough three months for football fans and stakeholders in Kenya following the impasse between Football Kenya Federation and Kenya Premier League Limited.
Nevertheless, it is a sigh of relief finally as the wrangles have been brought to an end, thanks to World governing body Fifa, who intervened through its delegation led by Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi.
However, as usual, in any match, there must be a winner and a looser. This one is not an exceptional as Goal weighs all the options to find out who won the duel.

In case you missed, the following were reached by concerned parties:

1. FKF to withdraw the court case against KPL lodged in February.

2. KPL to run the 2015 top tier league featuring 16 teams.

3. A league comprising 18 teams acquired from both the currently existing KPL and FKF-PL leagues to be adopted as from 2016.

4. The top flight league will be renamed the Football Kenya Federation and be run by the federation according to the federation's constitution.

5. The contract between broadcast sponsors SuperSport and the KPL limited will continues until its expiry at the end of 2015.

6. The federation shall reserve all commercial rights for the top flight league from 2016 onwards as per its statutes.

7. KPL constitution will be reviewed to conform to the FIFA and FKF statutes.

8. The league's judicial body members shall be elected by the general assembly and not through appointments.

9. MOU will be crafted and signed by both parties to safeguard relationship between FKF and KPL while federation statutes are followed to the letter.

10. Promotion criteria to be set to necessitate next year's harmonized 18 team league.

Jack Oguda and company might feel that the federation has been oppressing them with its demands before the amicable solution was reached. As stipulated above, it is obvious the federation was demanding for what was rightfully belonging to it.

KPL has done a great work for the Kenyan league, that is a fact which no one can deny, but truth be told, it has been exercising some privileges which belonged to the federation like judicial decisions and commercial deals among others.

The real issue was not about the number of teams in the league, it was obvious, sponsorship monies was the problem. No one wanted to lose, everyone wanted to gain. As Kenyans wait eagerly for the October elections, one thing is clear, suppose the current federation administration retains position, KPL will be reduced to ‘prefect' role in the league.

The match has been intense, the players have been aggressive, the referees have been overwhelmed, but after extra time, Sam Nyamweya and company can smile with Jack Oguda meditating the next move.

All in all, the solution has been reached; let us get back to the stadiums as we wait for the elections.

I have read reports that KPL renewed their contract with Supersport until 2020.

The official however, declined to reveal how much the new deal is worth insisting it is a private contract between the two companies. The new deal which will see KPL earn about Sh220million will expire in 2020.

And FKF chairman Nyamweya has said that he will not discard Supersport but will try to harmonize the two broadcasting partners so both can co-exist in 2016

Ultimately if the clubs refuse to obey just like they did this year, Kenya will once again have parallel leagues and court cases. So it is not clear that Azam will have sole rights in 2016. In fact it is unlikely. The contract that supersport signed lasts until 2020 and it cannot simply be thrown away.

Also, KPL has the right to run the league. It is FIFA who gave them permission to run the league in 2003 agains in 2006 and now again in 2015. Just like the English premier league is run by clubs and not the FA. This league is better when it is run by clubs. There is less corruption. Nyamweya is a very corrupt fellow in case you did not know. FKF is run out if his private bank account.
 

The contract KPL signed with Supersport will lose its rights once the rights granted by FKF to KPL expires by end of year. I see KPL as tenants who have entered a sublease agreement with supersport. Unfortunately, landloards wants their house back to lease it directly to Azam,bypassing the existing tenants. Since the tenants-landloard agreement expires end of this year. Unless KPL had a clear provision in its soon to be expiring contract that grants it extension, it will lose the rights it has given to SuperSports.

I also don't like exclusivity, but business owners prefer it to maximize their returns. So this will certainly not go well for KPL, come end of this year.Unless they somehow manage to convince the courts they have more rights over FKF.

The only person that will lose is Kenyans, since the teams will not be getting the monies they so desperately are in need of.

Please read the link I posted. FKF Chairman Sam Nyamweya does not want to end the Supersport deal. He claims he wants to harmonize the two deals:

It seems he has realized that the supersport contract that lasts until 2020 cannot be discarded.
According to the Daily Nation, FIFA are still in the country mediating additional talks between KPL and FKF. Those declaring early victory for Azam should hold their celebrations and gloating. There is still a long way to go before Azam becomes sole broadcast partner for KPL. It may take years.
 

IF AZAM pulls out it's Kenyan's who will be left to lose. I fail to understand your attitude towards Azam losing.IF Supersports were doing such a great job, ther shouldn't be a need for AZAM in first place.It seems Super sports aren't giving good enough package.FKF want's to have a cake and eat it, that's what African technocrats are good at. Players will lose at the end of the day, the moment the parties concerned decide to disagree into incoming AZAM cash, while their Tanzania and Uganda counterparts are flourishing from AZAM extra cash.

I never said I want Azam to leave. I have said all along that Kenyans welcome foreign investment whether its from Tanzania or South Africa. What I am saying is that it is still not clear who will televise the Kenya premier league in 2016. That issue has not been decided.

Let Azam compete with Supersport. Competition is good. Supersport will now be forced to improve or else they will lose to Azam. However one problem I have with the Azam deal is that it puts money directly into Nyamweya's pocket. This man is very corrupt. He will siphone some of the money into his bank account.

Your source may or may not be correct. I think it is biased in FKF's favour.
Most legitimate news sources are saying that it is still not clear who will have broadcasting rights in 2016. It has not been decided yet. So please stop crowning Azam as the King before he has been inaugurated.
The Standard newspaper is now reporting this:
MP&Silva will call the shots as representatives of the federation. - With the KPL-Supersport 2016-2021 deal invalidated, MP&Silva now have a huge carrot to dangle to Azam TV, KTN, Citizen, NTV, K24 or even the pay TV giants Supersport themselves.

The point is that we still don't know who will televise football in Kenya in 2016. It is still under negotiation. We only know that in 2015, Supersport will televise the top tier league and Azam will televise the 2nd tier league. As I see it, all these companies have a chance to win broadcasting rights in 2016.

Maybe they are biased and maybe they are not. The only thing that is clear is that we still do not know who will televise Kenya football in 2016. No one has come out and unequivocally stated who will have the rights. So far all we have is conjecture and prognostication.

All we know is that in 2015, Supersport will televise the top tier league and Azam will televise the second tier league if they so choose. So lets be patient and wait for negotiations before we crown Azam as the king.

Everyone please read the article below from a reliable source. It is the most detailed report I have read so far and it is impartial. It says among other things

1. Azam does not own TV rights in Kenya, MP Silva owns it and can cede TV rights to Azam, NTV and others.
2. KPL clubs want to stay with Supersport and will be unwilling to cede TV rights to FKF
3. It is still not clear who will televise football in 2016. Azam has signed a three year contract but in 2016 they could still end up televising the second tier league if KPL clubs refuse to do business with Azam

Azam TV ready for takeoff with FKF PL broadcast

Azam TV are all hands on deck, ready for the live broadcast of FKF Premier League matches. They will start this afternoon with a double header featuring Shabana versus Kakamega Homeboyz and Kariobangi Sharks facing off with Moyas FC at Kasarani Stadium.

The matches will be beamed across African countries on Azam 1 channel.

Azam Kenya General Manager Martin Abuya said their entrance into the local scene will be a game changer.

Each of the 18 teams of the FKF Premier League will have four matches broadcast live during the season.

Speaking during the inauguration, FKF CEO Michael Esakwa described Azam's arrival as a dream come true for local football.

"It shows more opportunities are opening up in Kenyan football scene. We challenge clubs to make the most out of this opportunity," Esakwa said. "As a federation, our work to is explore channels from which clubs and players can broaden their horizons. Azam's entry into Kenyan football is one of those fruits."

Football Kenya Federation top officials welcome Outside Broadcast bus ahead of this weekend's live coverage of FKF Premier League matches

The Outside Broadcasting van for Azam TV has arrived in Nairobi ahead of this weekend live matches of Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

The van arrived on Tuesday and was received by top Football Kenya Federation officials. According to FKF President Sam Nyamweya they are happy to have the van in Nairobi and is confident the new initiative will spice up FKF Premier League.

"This is a historical moment for us. Our clubs should expect to get great exposure as we embark on a new journey for our sport," Nyamweya told Goal on Tuesday.

Last Friday, the Tanzanian-based broadcasters entered into a three-year rights partnership worth Sh202 million with Football Kenya Federation Premier League. The deal will see clubs in the newly formed FKF-PL each receive grants worth Sh10 million annually.

Azam TV CEO Rhys Torrington promised to air at least two matches live on a weekly basis on their sports channels. "We are keen to turn the sport into a great theatre by broadcasting as much football as we possibly can to Kenyans.

"The exposure that comes with airing of matches live on TV will play on the back of the players mind and motivate them to perform better."

The deal also allows a free to air station to transmit two matches every week.
